The TP-Link VIGI NVR4016H is a 16-channel network video recorder with 320 Mbps of incoming and outgoing bandwidth, four SATA hard drive bays and two gigabit Ethernet ports for network fault tolerance and port aggregation. It records up to 8MP with H.265+, has two HDMI outputs (one up to 4K) plus VGA, 16-channel synchronous playback, 16 alarm inputs and 4 outputs, and Auto Initialise for quick setup.

VIGI NVR4016H overview

The VIGI NVR4016H is TP-Link's VIGI 16-channel network video recorder, with the headline "Security Never Shuts Down". It accepts 16 channels of IP video with 320 Mbps of incoming and 320 Mbps of outgoing bandwidth, and records at resolutions up to 8MP, with 5MP, 4MP, 3MP, 1080p and lower also listed. Video compression covers H.265+, H.265, H.264+ and H.264, and audio G.711A, G.711U and G.726. Decoding capability is listed as ten channels at 3MP or sixteen at 1080p at 25 fps, and four channels at 8MP, six at 5MP or eight at 4MP at 30 fps. Up to 16 channels can play back synchronously; TP-Link notes that fewer than 16, or none, may play simultaneously if the total resolution exceeds 32MP.

Record modes are manual, scheduled and motion-detection recording, with instant, regular, tag and event playback, and backups as regular or video clip backup. Playback controls include play, pause, stop, fast forward and backward, frame-by-frame, full screen, video clip and clip export, digital zoom, recording lock and audio on/off. Storage is provided by four SATA interfaces, each supporting a hard drive of up to 16 TB (hard drives are not included), plus one eSATA interface, two front USB 2.0 ports and one rear USB 3.0 port. To save time on setup, TP-Link says a single click on Auto Initialise sets up basic IPC and hard disk parameters, greatly reducing configuration time.

Networking is a highlight. The NVR4016H has two RJ45 10/100/1000 Mbps ports, and TP-Link lists three dual-port modes: Multi-Address Mode, which allows two different gateways; network fault tolerance, which creates a safeguard or redundancy for your data; and port aggregation, which realises bandwidth stacking and mutual backup. For local viewing it has two HDMI outputs and one VGA output. HDMI1 reaches 3840 x 2160 at 30 Hz, while HDMI2 and VGA reach 1920 x 1080 at 60 Hz. HDMI1 can run independently alongside either HDMI2 or VGA, but HDMI2 and VGA cannot operate at the same time; if both are connected, HDMI2 takes precedence. Multi-view layouts are 1, 4, 6, 8, 9 or 16 windows.

Alarm features, which require a camera, include motion detection, video tampering, scene change, line-crossing, intrusion, region entering and exiting, loitering, object abandoned or removed, vehicle and human detection, abnormal sound detection and Smart Frame. Anomaly alarms cover video loss, offline and IP conflict, disk, login and fan exceptions, and alarm linkage options are recording, white light alarm, buzzer, log and audible alarm. For integration there are sixteen alarm inputs and four alarm outputs, an RS232 serial interface and one-channel RCA audio input and output; TP-Link's port diagram shows detectors such as smoke and infrared detectors on the alarm inputs and a horn or alarm bell on the outputs. ONVIF Profile S and CGI interoperability are listed, with remote viewing from Android and iOS phones or Chrome, Firefox and Edge browsers. The unit takes 100 to 240 V AC at 50 to 60 Hz (1.5 A), drawing up to 5.5 W without disks and 45 W with disks. It measures 440 x 330 x 44 mm, weighs 4.0 kg net, and operates from -10 to 55 degrees C at 10 to 90% RH non-condensing. Because of its weight, TP-Link recommends using a tray (not included) when rack mounting with angle iron.
