The TOUGHCable PRO in depth

Outdoor carrier-class shielded Cat 5e

TOUGHCable PRO is Ubiquiti's Category 5e outdoor carrier-class shielded cable. Ubiquiti describes it as industrial-grade Ethernet cabling at 24 AWG. This UTC-40 listing is a 40 m length of TOUGHCable PRO, cut from Ubiquiti's 1000 ft (304.8 m) box. The 40 m length is what you receive, not the full box.

Cable construction

The cross-section shows a conductor, insulation, an ESD drain wire, a separation element, a cable shield, a rip cord and a weatherproof jacket. The copper drain wire and foil shield are terminated through a TOUGHCable connector. Ubiquiti's guide covers this in a step-by-step wiring procedure.

Termination and connectors

Ubiquiti TOUGHCable Ethernet Connectors are sold separately in 100-count packages and are designed for use with TOUGHCable cabling. Ubiquiti says they help protect against Ethernet electrostatic discharge (ESD) attacks and hardware damage, and allow rapid field deployment without soldering. The guide wires both ends to the T568B specification. It lists wire strippers/cutters, cable crimpers and needle-nose pliers as the tools needed.

Frequently asked questions

Straight answers about the TOUGHCable PRO from the ARC IP Networks team. Last reviewed October 2026.

The Ubiquiti UTC-40 is a 40 m cut length of TOUGHCable PRO, a Category 5e outdoor carrier-class shielded Ethernet cable. It is cut from Ubiquiti's 1000 ft (304.8 m) box, so the listing is the 40 m length only.

No. TOUGHCable Ethernet Connectors are sold separately by Ubiquiti, in 100-count packages. You will also need wire strippers/cutters, cable crimpers and needle-nose pliers, per Ubiquiti's installation requirements.

Ubiquiti's Quick Start Guide wires the cable to the T568B specification. The copper drain wire is shown as pin 0 in the wiring table.

The guide says to use a TOUGHCable connector to gauge the length, roughly 22 mm. Take care not to sever the foil shield protecting the drain wire and twisted pair.

Per Ubiquiti, TOUGHCable CARRIER features an Anti-Crosstalk Divider and additional shielding, and is designed for optimal performance on Gigabit Ethernet networks. TOUGHCable PRO is the Category 5e outdoor carrier-class shielded cable with a copper drain wire.

Ubiquiti's limited warranty covers defects in material and workmanship for one (1) year from the date of shipment by Ubiquiti. It applies only if the product is installed and used per Ubiquiti's documentation, with CAT5 (or above) Ethernet cabling and shielded cabling for outdoor installations.
