The TP-Link UB500 is a Bluetooth 5.3 nano USB adapter that makes a PC or laptop without Bluetooth Bluetooth-capable. It connects up to seven Bluetooth devices at once, such as headphones, game controllers and keyboards, and TP-Link says it extends range for music from across the room. It measures 14.8 x 6.8 x 18.9 mm and supports Windows 11, 10, 8.1 and 7.

UB500 overview

The UB500 is TP-Link's Bluetooth 5.3 nano USB adapter, a small dongle that equips a PC or laptop with Bluetooth 5.3. TP-Link describes Bluetooth 5.3 as inheriting the high speed of earlier versions while improving reliability and security, for more robust coordination with game controllers, headphones, keyboards and other devices. Once it is plugged in, you connect your Bluetooth devices to the computer as you would with built-in Bluetooth, which suits desktops that never had Bluetooth and laptops whose internal Bluetooth has failed. TP-Link's Australian product page titles the UB500 as Bluetooth 5.3, while its specification table and package contents still list Bluetooth 5.0; the support page lists UB500 V1 and V2.

TP-Link highlights range for audio: thanks to the Bluetooth improvements, it says the UB500 has a longer transmission range between devices such as a music player and PC, so you can listen through a Bluetooth headset from another part of the room, or from the bedroom to the living room, without staying next to the computer. It supports up to seven Bluetooth devices at the same time, and TP-Link quotes twice the transmission speed for moving files, music and video between Bluetooth devices and the PC. TP-Link notes that speed, distance and capacity figures come from its laboratory testing and real performance varies.

The nano design is the other selling point. At 14.8 x 6.8 x 18.9 mm it is ultra-small, so you can insert it into any USB port and leave it there, whether travelling or at home. TP-Link lists Windows 11, 10, 8.1 and 7 as supported operating systems; on Windows 7 you need to install the driver from TP-Link's ub500 download page. It is rated for operation from 0 °C to 40 °C. In the box are the UB500 Bluetooth nano USB adapter and a quick installation guide.
