The TP-Link TL-WR802N is a 300 Mbps Wireless N nano router that fits in a pocket at 57 x 57 x 18 mm. It runs Router, Hotspot, Range Extender, Client and Access Point modes for hotels, home and travel, takes power through micro USB from its adapter, a phone charger or a computer, and is managed in the Tether app.

TL-WR802N overview

The TL-WR802N is TP-Link's 300 Mbps Wireless N nano router, a pocket-sized router for home and travel use. At 57 x 57 x 18 mm it is small enough for a laptop bag or pocket, and TP-Link pitches it at travellers, students and anyone who lives life on the go. Its single-band 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi 4 radio runs 802.11n/b/g at up to 300 Mbps through two fixed antennas, which TP-Link says suits video streaming, online gaming and internet calling, and its Wi-Fi range is rated for two-bedroom houses.

Five modes cover the main uses. In Router mode it plugs into a hotel Ethernet port and instantly creates a private wireless network to share internet access with multiple devices, which TP-Link says is ideal for most hotels and handy for streaming with a Chromecast or Fire TV Stick on the road. Hotspot (WISP) mode connects to an outdoor WISP access point. At home, Range Extender mode extends existing Wi-Fi, Client mode lets wired-only devices join an existing Wi-Fi network, and Access Point mode creates a wireless network from a wired connection.

Power is flexible: the TL-WR802N runs at 5 V 1 A through a micro USB port, from the included power adapter, a smartphone or USB charger, or a USB connection to a computer. It has one 10/100 Mbps WAN/LAN port and a reset button, and runs on a single-core CPU. Security includes an SPI firewall, access control, IP and MAC binding, ALG and a 2.4 GHz guest network, with WEP, WPA, WPA2 and WPA/WPA2-Enterprise (802.1x) encryption, Enterprise being available in Router and AP modes only.

Software features include parental controls with URL filtering and time controls, QoS by device, IGMP proxy for IPTV, virtual server, port forwarding and triggering, DMZ and UPnP, DHCP reservation and NO-IP, Comex and DynDNS dynamic DNS, with IPv4 and IPv6. Setup and management are via the TP-Link Tether app or web page. TP-Link lists V4 and V4.40 hardware. In the box are the TL-WR802N, a power adapter, a USB cable, an RJ45 Ethernet cable, a quick installation guide and a resource CD.
