The TP-Link TL-WR3002X, Roam 6 (AX3000), is a pocket-sized Wi-Fi 6 travel router with 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz. It adds a 2.5 Gbps WAN port, a gigabit LAN port, USB 3.0 and a microSD slot for up to 512 GB, with seven modes, OpenVPN, WireGuard, PPTP and L2TP, one-step captive portal login and USB-C power-bank support.

TL-WR3002X overview

The TL-WR3002X is the faster of TP-Link's two Roam 6 travel routers: AX3000 dual-band Wi-Fi 6 with 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz, both using 802.11ax, for streaming, downloading and gaming at the same time. TP-Link calls it powerful Wi-Fi in your pocket and says it can connect up to 80 devices; Airtime Fairness and four streams keep traffic flowing across them. At 105 x 91.3 x 30 mm it is designed for travel-friendly storage, and TP-Link also lists its HomeShield security among the headline features.

Its wired side sets it apart from the AX1500 TL-WR1512X. The WAN port runs at 2.5 Gbps, so in a hotel, office or apartment with a multi-gig Ethernet connection the router is not capped at gigabit, and a 1 Gbps LAN port connects a laptop, console or NAS. For files, a USB 3.0 port takes an external hard drive or thumb drive, and a microSD/TF card slot on the side accepts cards up to 512 GB, so photos and films can be shared to every connected device as a mobile media hub. The USB 3.0 port also tethers a smartphone or connects a 3G/4G USB modem.

TP-Link's own FAQ explains the modes. In Router mode it connects to an existing wired network, a phone via USB Tethering, or a 3G/4G USB modem. In Hotspot mode it connects to public Wi-Fi and creates a private network, so your devices connect to the Roam 6 once and come online wherever it does; it also acts as a firewall between your devices and others on the public network, and it avoids per-device charges or limits. One-step captive portal authentication in the Tether app handles login screens that older routers get stuck on. At home it runs as an access point, range extender or wireless client.

VPN support covers OpenVPN, WireGuard, PPTP and L2TP/IPSec as client, and OpenVPN and WireGuard as server, and it can run a VPN and a regular internet connection simultaneously. Security includes an SPI firewall, access control, IP and MAC binding, ALG, 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz guest networks, and WPA2-PSK, WPA3-Personal and WPA/WPA2-Enterprise encryption. Power comes from the supplied adapter or a 5 V 3 A power bank on the USB-C port (no built-in battery), and an ECO switch sits alongside the WPS/Reset button. In the box: the TL-WR3002X Roam 6, a power adapter, an RJ45 Ethernet cable, a USB cable, a quick installation guide and a Wi-Fi info card.
