The TP-Link TL-WR1512X, sold as Roam 6 (AX1500), is a pocket-sized dual-band Wi-Fi 6 travel router with up to 1201 Mbps on 5 GHz and 300 Mbps on 2.4 GHz. It has a gigabit WAN and LAN port, a USB 3.0 port for tethering, modems or file sharing, seven modes, WireGuard and OpenVPN, one-step captive portal login in the Tether app and USB-C power from a 5 V PD power bank.

TL-WR1512X overview

The TL-WR1512X is TP-Link's Roam 6 (AX1500), a portable Wi-Fi 6 router built for business trips, RV adventures, hotel stays, campgrounds and cafes. TP-Link describes it as ultra-portable and travel-ready, compact and light enough to slip into a pocket or backpack at 104 x 90 x 28 mm. Its dual-band AX1500 Wi-Fi reaches 1201 Mbps on 5 GHz with 802.11ax and 300 Mbps on 2.4 GHz with 802.11n, up to 1.5 Gbps combined, which TP-Link pitches for AR/VR gaming, 4K streaming and video conferencing. Airtime Fairness and four streams help it serve the devices you carry, and TP-Link says it can connect up to 60 devices.

Seven operating modes cover the connections you meet on the road. Router mode turns a hotel or office Ethernet port into your own Wi-Fi network. Hotspot (WISP) mode joins public Wi-Fi and creates a private network for your devices, and one-step captive portal login through the Tether app means you log in once and every device comes online. USB Tethering mode shares your phone's mobile data, and 3G/4G/5G USB Modem mode works with a USB modem. Access Point, Range Extender and Client modes make it useful at home too.

For privacy, the TL-WR1512X runs OpenVPN, PPTP, L2TP and WireGuard as both VPN server and client, and can run a VPN and a regular internet connection at the same time. TP-Link's lab figures are up to 170 Mbps with WireGuard and 80 Mbps with OpenVPN, and it lists compatibility with more than 35 VPN service providers (subscriptions bought separately). Network security includes an SPI firewall, access control, IP and MAC binding and ALG, with 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz guest networks. Wi-Fi encryption covers WPA3-Personal, WPA3/WPA2 mixed, WPA2-PSK, WPA2/WPA mixed and WPA2-Enterprise.

Wired devices get a gigabit WAN port and a gigabit LAN port, and the USB 3.0 port handles tethering, modems or a USB hard drive for file sharing across connected devices. Power comes from the included 5 V 3 A adapter or, through the Type-C port, from a 5 V PD power bank (the router has no battery), and TP-Link recommends the supplied adapter or a certified 5 V PD adapter. QoS by device, port forwarding, DMZ, UPnP, DHCP reservation, TP-Link, NO-IP and DynDNS, and IPv6 are supported, and management is through the Tether app or a web page, with a WPS/Reset button and a mode switch. In the box are the TL-WR1512X Roam 6, a power adapter, an RJ45 Ethernet cable, a USB cable and a quick installation guide.
