The TP-Link TL-WA801N is a 300 Mbps Wireless N access point for 2.4 GHz networks. It uses 802.11n MIMO with two fixed omni-directional antennas, supports Access Point, Multi-SSID, Client and Range Extender modes, and can be powered over up to 30 m of Ethernet with the included passive PoE injector, with WPA2 encryption and a WPS button.

TL-WA801N overview

The TL-WA801N is TP-Link's 300 Mbps Wireless N access point. TP-Link designed it to establish or expand a scalable wireless N network, or to connect Ethernet devices such as game consoles, digital media adapters, printers and network-attached storage to a wireless network. Its 2.4 GHz radio supports IEEE 802.11n, 802.11g and 802.11b at up to 300 Mbps, which TP-Link says suits smooth HD video, voice streaming and online gaming on a typical home or small-office connection.

The radio uses 802.11n MIMO, working through two antennas to transmit and receive, which TP-Link says helps overcome interference and signal degradation over long distances or through physical barriers in a small office or large apartment, even in a steel-and-concrete building. The TL-WA801N has two fixed omni-directional antennas. Its reception sensitivity is listed at -90 dBm for 11g 6 Mbps and -70 dBm for 11n HT40 MCS7, and transmission power is under 15 dBm (CE) or 20 dBm (FCC).

Four operating modes, Access Point, Multi-SSID, Client and Range Extender, cover building a WLAN, segmenting it, connecting wired devices to Wi-Fi and filling wireless dead zones in hard-to-wire locations. Flexible deployment comes from passive PoE: with the included passive PoE injector, one Ethernet cable carries data and power to the access point up to 30 m (100 ft) away, so it can be mounted on a wall or ceiling where the signal is best. The Ethernet port is 10/100 Mbps.

Wireless functions include radio on/off, WMM, Short GI, AP isolation, wireless statistics and a throughput monitor, and management supports SNMP. Security covers WEP, WPA/WPA2 and WPA/WPA2-PSK, and the WPS button makes a quick, WPA2-protected connection. The TL-WA801N measures 181.6 x 129.5 x 36.2 mm, runs from a 9 V DC 0.6 A supply, and operates from 0 °C to 40 °C. In the box are the TL-WA801N, a power adapter, a passive PoE power injector, an RJ45 Ethernet cable and a quick installation guide.
