The TP-Link TL-WA1801 is an AX1800 dual-band Wi-Fi 6 access point with up to 1201 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz. It has four antennas with beamforming, a gigabit port with passive PoE and an included injector, Access Point, Range Extender, Client and Multi-SSID modes, captive portal, WPA3 and WPA/WPA2-Enterprise, and setup in the Tether app.

TL-WA1801 overview

The TL-WA1801 brings Wi-Fi 6 to TP-Link's TL-WA access point range. TP-Link describes 802.11ax as potentially the most significant advancement in Wi-Fi, with a large boost in speed and total capacity, and the TL-WA1801 delivers it at AX1800: 1201 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz, or about 1.8 Gbps combined, for browsing, streaming and downloading at the same time. TP-Link positions the 5 GHz band for Ultra-HD streaming and online gaming and the 2.4 GHz band for everyday tasks such as email and browsing. Its chart compares the 2x2 Wi-Fi 6 5 GHz link against 867 Mbps for 2x2 Wi-Fi 5 and 433 Mbps for 1x1 Wi-Fi 5.

Coverage comes from four antennas with beamforming, which concentrate Wi-Fi signals towards your devices to reach every corner of the home or office, even over long distances. The single gigabit port carries both the uplink and, with passive PoE, the power: the box includes a PoE injector and a 48 V 0.375 A power adapter, so you can mount the access point where the signal is needed with one Ethernet cable. TP-Link says the elegant housing attaches to any wall or desktop; it measures 225 x 145.5 x 37 mm, with power, WPS and reset buttons.

The four modes work as on other TL-WA models: Access Point (default) to add Wi-Fi to a wired network, Multi-SSID with up to four separate SSIDs and VLANs per band for departments with different access policies, Range Extender to repeat an existing wireless signal, and Client mode to connect a wired game console or IPTV box to Wi-Fi. A captive portal gives small businesses such as cafes and salons a guest page with an advertisement or terms. Security steps up to WPA, WPA2, WPA3 and WPA/WPA2-Enterprise, with WPA3 needing client support.

Management is through a web page or TP-Link's free Tether app for Android and iOS. System tools include SNMP and Ping Watchdog, and there is a DHCP server with client list, WMM QoS, access control, wireless statistics, and IPv4 and IPv6. The TL-WA1801 operates from 0 °C to 40 °C. In the box are the TL-WA1801, a power adapter, a PoE power injector, an RJ45 Ethernet cable and a quick installation guide.
