The TP-Link TX401 is a 10 Gigabit PCI Express network adapter with one 10GBASE-T RJ45 port, which TP-Link says is ten times faster than typical gigabit adapters. It also negotiates 5, 2.5 and 1 Gbps and 100 Mbps, uses a PCI Express 3.0 x4 slot, includes a 1.5 m CAT6A cable and both brackets, and supports Windows, Windows Server and Linux.

TX401 overview

The TX401 is TP-Link's 10 Gigabit PCI Express network adapter. Using 10GBASE-T technology over a standard RJ45 port, it delivers speeds of up to 10 Gbps, which TP-Link describes as ten times faster than typical gigabit adapters, for smooth internet access and local data transfers. It conforms to IEEE 802.3, 802.3u, 802.3ab, 802.3bz, 802.3an, 802.3az and 802.3x, so as well as 10 Gbps it supports the multi-gigabit 5GBASE-T and 2.5GBASE-T rates of 802.3bz, plus 1000BASE-T and 100BASE-TX. Data rates are 100 Mbps, 1, 2.5, 5 and 10 Gbps in half duplex and 200 Mbps, 2, 5, 10 and 20 Gbps in full duplex.

That versatility is TP-Link's second point: 10GBASE-T is backward compatible with Fast Ethernet and gigabit Ethernet, automatically negotiating between higher and lower speed connections. If your switch or NAS is 2.5G or 5G today, the TX401 links at that rate and moves to 10 Gbps when the rest of the network is upgraded. The 802.3az standard in its list is Energy Efficient Ethernet. LEDs show 10 Gbps link and activity separately from 5/2.5/1 Gbps and 100 Mbps link and activity.

Cabling matters at 10 Gbps, so TP-Link includes a 1.5 m CAT6A Ethernet cable rated for up to 10 Gbps, noting that a regular cable is often rated only for 1 Gbps. For longer runs, use cable rated for 10GBASE-T. The card needs a PCI Express 3.0 x4 slot (or a wider PCIe slot) to carry its bandwidth, and measures 120.8 x 98.2 x 21.5 mm. Standard and low-profile brackets are both supplied, with TP-Link noting the flexibility to fit mini tower cases.

Supported operating systems are Windows 11, 10, 8.1, 8 and 7, Windows Server 2019, 2016 and 2012 R2, and Linux. TP-Link advises updating the driver after an OS update, and its support page lists V1 and V2 hardware. Actual throughput depends on cable class, the environment and computer performance. The TX401 carries FCC and CE certification and operates from 0 °C to 40 °C. In the box are the TX401 10 Gigabit PCIe network adapter, standard and low-profile brackets, a quick installation guide, a resource CD and a 1.5 m CAT6A Ethernet cable.
