The TP-Link TX201 is a 2.5 Gigabit PCIe network adapter that brings 2.5GBASE-T to a desktop or server through one RJ45 port, 2.5 times faster than standard gigabit Ethernet. It auto-negotiates down to 1 Gbps, 100 Mbps and 10 Mbps, uses a PCI Express 2.1 x1 slot, supports QoS and works with Windows, Windows Server and Linux.

TX201 overview

The TX201 is TP-Link's 2.5 Gigabit PCIe network adapter. TP-Link's point is simple: 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet reaches data rates of up to 2.5 billion bits per second, 2.5 times faster than standard gigabit Ethernet, which matters for bandwidth-intensive tasks such as moving files to and from a NAS, running a home server, or using an internet plan faster than 1 Gbps. It conforms to IEEE 802.3, 802.3u, 802.3ab, 802.3bz and 802.3x, and supports 2.5GBASE-T, 1000BASE-T and 100BASE-TX network media. Data rates are 10 Mbps, 100 Mbps, 1 Gbps and 2.5 Gbps in half-duplex mode, and 20 Mbps, 200 Mbps, 2 Gbps and 5 Gbps in full duplex.

TP-Link describes three uses. For local storage, a 2.5G adapter builds a fast channel between a central NAS and the working machines on your network, and TP-Link pictures it with its SG108-M2 2.5G multi-gigabit desktop switch. For a host server, it suits a high-specification machine serving other clients. For internet access, it lets you make full use of a high-speed connection for large game downloads, live streaming and cloud backups. To get 2.5 Gbps you need a 2.5G-capable switch, router or NAS at the other end of the cable.

The port is backward compatible with 1 Gbps, 100 Mbps and 10 Mbps BASE-T connections, automatically negotiating between higher and lower speeds, so you can install it now and upgrade the rest of the network to 2.5G later. TP-Link also lists Wake-on-LAN for remotely powering the computer on, support for low-cost CAT5e cable, simple installation with the utility on the supplied CD, and QoS support to ensure enough bandwidth and avoid congestion for streaming and real-time gaming, and 802.3x flow control. Three LEDs on the bracket show 2.5 Gbps, 1 Gbps and 100/10 Mbps link and activity, so you can see the negotiated speed at a glance.

The card uses a PCI Express 2.1 x1 interface and measures 120.8 x 98.2 x 21.5 mm. Standard and low-profile brackets are both supplied, so it fits full-height and mini tower cases. Operating system support is broad: Windows 11, 10, 8.1, 8 and 7, Windows Server 2022, 2019, 2016, 2012 R2, 2012 and 2008 R2, and Linux, and TP-Link advises updating the driver after an OS update. It carries FCC and CE certification and operates from 0 °C to 40 °C. In the box are the TX201 2.5 Gigabit PCIe network adapter, standard and low-profile brackets, a quick installation guide and a resource CD.
