The TP-Link TC40 is a Tapo outdoor pan/tilt security Wi-Fi camera that records 1080p Full HD (1920 x 1080) and turns through 360° of pan coverage. Its 850 nm IR LEDs are rated to 98 ft (29.9 m) with a colour night vision mode, AI person detection sends alerts through the Tapo app, and a siren with dual spotlights forms a customisable sound and light alarm. The housing is IP65 rated, and footage goes to a microSD card of up to 512 GB (sold separately) or to Tapo Care cloud storage by subscription.

TC40 overview

TP-Link Australia lists the TC40 as its outdoor pan/tilt security Wi-Fi camera, built to capture everything around the spot where it is mounted. The current AU page covers hardware version V2. A 1/3-inch progressive scan CMOS sensor sits behind a 3.89 mm lens with an 85.5° diagonal, 73.5° horizontal and 41° vertical field of view, and video is recorded at 1920 x 1080 and 15 fps using H.264. TP-Link adds 3DNR and WDR image enhancement to keep footage clean in mixed light.

The motorised head has a 340° mechanical pan range that delivers 360° pan coverage, and a 90° mechanical tilt range that the specification table gives as 132° of tilt coverage; the summary at the top of the same page states a 130° vertical viewing range. The camera can track motion as it moves, or you can switch on patrol mode so it cruises between up to 8 customised points you have saved in the app.

At night the TC40 offers two approaches. 850 nm infrared LEDs are rated to 98 ft (29.9 m), and colour night vision captures vibrant detail in low light, which TP-Link describes as reaching up to 30 metres. In smart mode the live view changes to colour night vision once a person is detected. The same dual spotlights are part of the alarm: you can craft your own audio alarm, set the spotlight intensity, and trigger the integrated 90 dB siren (measured at 10 cm) together with the lights.

Smart AI on the TC40 identifies people and sends real-time notifications through the Tapo app, alongside standard motion detection, and customisable activity zones narrow alerts down to the areas you care about. Notifications with a snapshot need Tapo Care services. Storage is a microSD card of up to 512 GB, which must be purchased separately; TP-Link estimates a 512 GB card holds 954 hours (about 40 days) of 1080p footage. Tapo Care cloud storage is available as a subscription after a free trial, with rich notifications and 30-day video clip history.

The housing carries an IP65 rating against jets of water and dust, and TP-Link quotes an operating range of -30 °C to 60 °C. A physical privacy mode blocks the lens with the housing when you do not want it watching. You can mount the TC40 on a wall, an eave or a pole; pole mounting needs loops, which are purchased separately. Connection is 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi (IEEE 802.11b/g/n), with RTSP and ONVIF support, and Alexa and Google Assistant voice control. The camera measures 123.8 x 123 x 90 mm.
