The TP-Link TL-SX105 is a 5-port 10G multi-gigabit desktop switch: every RJ45 port auto-negotiates 100 Mbps, 1G, 2.5G, 5G or 10G, with 100 Gbps of switching capacity and 74.4 Mpps forwarding. It is fanless and silent in a metal case for desk or wall mounting, plug and play, and supports 802.1p/DSCP QoS. TP-Link pitches it at LAN parties, home entertainment, small and home offices and workstations.

TL-SX105 overview

The TL-SX105 is TP-Link's 5-port 10G desktop switch, which TP-Link calls its flagship 10G product. All five RJ45 ports support 100 Mbps, 1 Gbps, 2.5 Gbps, 5 Gbps and 10 Gbps, and auto-negotiation senses each device's link speed and adjusts for compatibility and optimal performance. TP-Link lists 10G NAS, 10G servers, workstations, gaming computers, 2.5G/5G/10G Wi-Fi 6 access points, 8K video and desktops among the devices it serves. Switching capacity is 100 Gbps and the packet forwarding rate is 74.4 Mpps, using store-and-forward transmission, and the switch conforms to IEEE 802.3, 802.3u, 802.3ab, 802.3bz, 802.3an, 802.3x and 802.1p.

Cabling matters at multi-gigabit speeds, and TP-Link's datasheet sets out the limits. For 1000BASE-T, 2.5GBASE-T and 5GBASE-T, Category 5e or better UTP cable supports runs up to 100 m. For 10GBASE-T, Category 6 UTP supports up to 55 m, and Category 6, 6a or 7 STP supports up to 100 m; the product page also notes that Cat6a or higher rated cables support 10G connections up to 100 m. TP-Link says the switch is designed to integrate into existing gigabit Ethernet infrastructures, and Auto MDI/MDIX removes the need for crossover cables. It is plug and play, allowing easy deployment without a technician, and 802.1p/DSCP QoS lets you prioritise traffic such as gaming, along with IEEE 802.3x flow control.

TP-Link names several scenarios for it. For LAN parties, it offers speed and lower latency with QoS to prioritise gaming traffic. For home entertainment, TP-Link mentions buffer-free multi-channel 8K video. You can use it to expand the 10GE LAN ports of a Wi-Fi 6 router and connect more devices at up to 10 Gbps, and for business and home offices it provides fast connections to workstations, desktop computers and Wi-Fi 6 access points. TP-Link describes it as ideal for gaming and for small office and home office use, with reliable connections and the lowest possible latency.

The TL-SX105 has a fanless design for silent operation, which TP-Link says suits any home or business, with a durable metal casing and professional heat dissipation design. It can sit on a desk or be wall mounted, and measures 226 x 131 x 35 mm. LEDs include one system power indicator and five link/activity indicators, one built into each RJ45 port. Power comes from an external 12 VDC / 2.0 A adapter. The switch operates from 0 to 40 °C at 10 to 90 % RH non-condensing, carries CE and FCC certifications, and TP-Link's datasheet lists an MTBF of 262,829.91 hours at 25 °C. In the box are the TL-SX105, a power cord, an installation guide and rubber feet. ARC IP Networks supplies the TL-SX105 from Australian stock with the full manufacturer's warranty.
