The TP-Link SM6110-SR is an Omada 25GBase-SR SFP28 LC transceiver for multi-mode fibre. It is dual rate (25.78 Gbps and 10.31 Gbps) and works at 850 nm, reaching up to 100 m on OM4 or 70 m on OM3 at 25.78 Gbps, and up to 300 m on OM3 at 10.31 Gbps. It uses a duplex LC/UPC connector, supports DDM, is hot swappable and draws no more than 1 W.

SM6110-SR overview

The SM6110-SR is TP-Link's short-reach SFP28 optical module for Omada networks. TP-Link says it is designed to extend transfer distances based on 10G/25G Ethernet connectivity, and describes it as a 10G/25GBASE-SR high-performance 850 nm multi-mode SFP+/SFP28 transceiver. It supports full-duplex 10G and 25G Ethernet connections, with a dual data rate of 25.78 Gbps and 10.31 Gbps. The published reach depends on both the data rate and the grade of multi-mode fibre: up to 100 m over OM4 and 70 m over OM3 at 25.78 Gbps, and up to 300 m over OM3 at 10.31 Gbps. Because it is dual rate, the same module suits both port speeds: TP-Link names compatibility with switches with 25G ports like the SX6632YF, and with 10G ports like the SG3428X and SG3452X.

On the optical side, the SM6110-SR uses a VCSEL transmitter and a PIN receiver in COB packaging, with a duplex LC/UPC connector and an 850 nm wavelength. The datasheet lists the media as MMF (multimode fibre) with a 50/125 µm core size; the AU product page lists the fibre type as 50/125 µm or 62.5/125 µm multi-mode, and its reach figures are given for OM3 and OM4. Transmitter power is -8.4 to 2.4 dBm at 25.78 Gbps and -7.3 to -1 dBm at 10.31 Gbps. Receiver sensitivity is better than -10.3 dBm at 25.78 Gbps and -11.1 dBm at 10.31 Gbps, receiver overload is above 2.4 dBm and 0.5 dBm respectively, and the extinction ratio is above 2 dB at 25.78 Gbps and 3 dB at 10.31 Gbps. These are the published figures to work from when you plan the optical budget for a run. A built-in CDR (clock and data recovery) is also listed.

For day-to-day operation, the module supports Digital Diagnostic Monitoring (DDM) and is hot swappable, which TP-Link describes as hot-pluggable with maximum flexibility. It is compatible with the 10G/25G Small Form Pluggable Multi-Source Agreement (SFP+/SFP28 MSA). Listed standards and protocols are IEEE 802.3ae and IEEE 802.3by; SFF-8402, SFF-8431, SFF-8432 and SFF-8472; eCPRI and CPRI; and TCP/IP. It runs from a 3.3 V supply with power consumption of no more than 1 W, which TP-Link highlights as low power consumption.

The SM6110-SR is rated for operating temperatures of 0 to 70 °C (32 to 158 °F) and storage from -40 to 85 °C (-40 to 185 °F). The AU product page lists 5 to 85% RH non-condensing humidity for both operation and storage, while the datasheet gives 10 to 90% RH operating and 5 to 90% RH storage, both non-condensing. It measures 56.75 x 14 x 11.26 mm (2.23 x 0.56 x 0.44 in) and carries CE, FCC and RoHS regulatory compliance. In the box are the SM6110-SR and an installation guide. ARC IP Networks supplies the SM6110-SR from Australian stock with the full manufacturer's warranty.
