The TP-Link TL-SG116 is a 16-port gigabit unmanaged desktop switch for home and office networks. It has 16 non-blocking 10/100/1000 Mbps ports with auto-negotiation, a 23.8 Mpps forwarding rate, 802.1p/DSCP QoS and IGMP Snooping, energy-saving Green Technology and a fanless design.

TL-SG116 overview

The TL-SG116 is a 16-port gigabit desktop switch that TP-Link describes as an easy way to increase the speed of your network server and backbone connections, whether at home or in the office. It has sixteen 10/100/1000 Mbps RJ45 ports with auto-negotiation and Auto-MDI/MDIX. TP-Link describes the ports as non-blocking, enabling instant transfer of large, bandwidth-intensive files without interference. The packet forwarding rate is 23.8 Mpps, with store-and-forward transmission, a 4.1 Mb packet buffer, an 8K MAC address table and 10 KB jumbo frames. Supported standards are IEEE 802.3i, 802.3u, 802.3ab, 802.3x and 802.1p.

Setup is plug and play: TP-Link says the design allows easy deployment without the need for a technician. Auto-negotiation on each port senses the link speed of the connected device and adjusts for compatibility and performance, so older 10 and 100 Mbps devices work alongside gigabit equipment. Although the switch is unmanaged, its advanced features include IEEE 802.3x flow control, 802.1p/DSCP QoS and IGMP Snooping. Each RJ45 port has a built-in Link/Act indicator, plus a system power indicator, so you can see which ports are connected and active.

Energy use is kept low. TP-Link's Green Technology automatically adjusts power consumption according to link status and cable length, which TP-Link says lets you expand your network while minimising your carbon footprint and lowering energy bills. Maximum power consumption is 10 W at 220 V / 50 Hz and maximum heat dissipation is 34.12 BTU/h. Power comes from an external adapter with a 12 VDC / 1.0 A output. The switch is fanless, and its spec table lists a physical security lock.

The TL-SG116 is a desktop switch measuring 286 x 111.7 x 25.4 mm (11.26 x 4.4 x 1.0 in), and rubber feet are included for desk use. It is rated for operation from 0 to 40 degrees C at 10 to 90 per cent non-condensing humidity, and for storage from -40 to 70 degrees C at 5 to 90 per cent non-condensing. Certifications are CE and FCC. In the box are the 16-port 10/100/1000 Mbps desktop switch, a power adapter, an installation guide and rubber feet. ARC IP Networks supplies the TL-SG116 from Australian stock with the full manufacturer's warranty.
