The TP-Link TL-SG108 is an 8-port gigabit desktop switch with eight non-blocking 10/100/1000 Mbps ports, 802.1p/DSCP QoS for voice and video, IGMP snooping for IPTV and a fanless metal case. It is plug and play with no configuration, uses green technology to adjust power use, and TP-Link pitches it for home or office.

TL-SG108 overview

The TL-SG108 is TP-Link's 8-port 10/100/1000 Mbps desktop switch. Its eight gigabit ports are non-blocking, which TP-Link says enables instant transfer of large, bandwidth-intensive files without interference, and auto-negotiation on each port senses the link speed of the connected device and adjusts to it for full compatibility and optimal performance, with Auto-MDI/MDIX on every port. TP-Link describes it as an easy way to increase the speed of your network server and backbone connections, whether you are at home or in the office. Performance figures include a packet forwarding rate of 11.9 Mpps, a 1.5 Mb packet buffer, a 4K MAC address table, 16 KB jumbo frames and store-and-forward transmission.

There is no setup. The plug-and-play design makes for easy deployment with no technician needed and no configuration required: connect your router and devices and the switch begins forwarding traffic. It still includes traffic features. 802.1p/DSCP QoS ensures smooth traffic for latency-sensitive applications such as voice and video. IGMP snooping optimises multicast traffic delivery, which TP-Link says gives a better network experience for applications like IPTV. IEEE 802.3x flow control is also supported, and the switch conforms to IEEE 802.3i, 802.3u, 802.3ab, 802.3x and 802.1p.

The interior components are protected by a high-quality metal casing to ensure product longevity, and TP-Link says the TL-SG108 has passed an array of stringent reliability tests. It is fanless and measures 158 x 101 x 25 mm. LEDs show system power, and link/activity indicators are built into each RJ45 port. TP-Link's green technology means power consumption automatically adjusts according to link status and cable length, so you can expand your network while minimising your carbon footprint; maximum power consumption is just 2.77 W (220 V / 50 Hz), with maximum heat dissipation of 9.45 BTU/h. Power comes from an external 5 VDC / 0.6 A adapter.

The TL-SG108 is rated for 0 to 40 °C operation at 10 to 90 % non-condensing humidity, with storage from -40 to 70 °C, and carries CE and FCC certifications. In the box are the 8-Port 10/100/1000 Mbps Desktop Switch, a power adapter and an installation guide, and support files are published on TP-Link's Australian support site. ARC IP Networks supplies the TL-SG108 from Australian stock with the full manufacturer's warranty.
