The TP-Link TL-SG105 is a 5-port gigabit desktop switch with five non-blocking 10/100/1000 Mbps ports, auto-negotiation and auto MDI/MDIX. It is plug and play with no configuration required, adds IGMP snooping, loop prevention and 802.3x flow control, and runs fanless in a durable metal case for home or office use.

TL-SG105 overview

The TL-SG105 is TP-Link's five-port gigabit desktop switch, and TP-Link describes it as an easy way to increase the speed of your network server and backbone connections, whether you are at home or in the office. It has five non-blocking 10/100/1000 Mbps RJ45 ports, which TP-Link says enable the transfer of large, bandwidth-intensive files without interference. Auto-negotiation on each port senses the link speed of the connected device and adjusts to match it for full compatibility and performance, and auto MDI/MDIX is supported on every port. Performance figures include a 7.4 Mpps packet forwarding rate, a 1 Mb packet buffer, a 2K MAC address table, 16 KB jumbo frames and store-and-forward transmission.

Setup is plug and play: TP-Link states there is no configuration required and no technician needed. Connect your devices, power the switch on and each port sets itself up. Beyond basic switching, the TL-SG105 lists several advanced features. IGMP snooping optimises the delivery of multimedia traffic, which TP-Link says gives a better experience for applications such as IPTV. Loop prevention helps protect the network from loops, and 802.3x flow control is supported. TP-Link lists 802.1p/DSCP QoS for V2 and later hardware versions, which helps keep latency-sensitive traffic such as voice and video flowing smoothly.

The switch is built to last. TP-Link says its interior components are protected by a high-quality metal casing for product longevity, and that the TL-SG105 has passed an array of stringent reliability tests. It is fanless and measures 100 x 98 x 25 mm. Link/Act indicators are built into each RJ45 port alongside a system power LED, so you can see port activity at a glance. Supported standards are IEEE 802.3i, 802.3u, 802.3ab, 802.3x and 802.1p.

TP-Link's green Ethernet technology automatically adjusts power consumption according to link status and cable length, and maximum power consumption is just 3.0 W (220 V / 50 Hz) with 10.23 BTU/h of heat dissipation. Power comes from an external 5 V DC / 0.6 A adapter. The switch is rated for operation from 0 °C to 40 °C at 10% to 90% RH non-condensing, and storage from -40 °C to 70 °C, and carries CE and FCC certification. In the box are the TL-SG105, a power adapter and an installation guide. ARC IP Networks supplies the TL-SG105 from Australian stock with the full manufacturer's warranty.
