The TP-Link TL-SG1008D is an 8-port Gigabit unmanaged desktop switch in a compact 180 x 90 x 25.5 mm case. It offers 16 Gbps switching capacity, a 4K MAC address table, 15 KB jumbo frames, 802.3x flow control, back pressure and 802.1p/DSCP QoS (V7 and later), is fanless and draws a maximum of 4.63 W from an external 5 VDC / 0.6 A adapter.

TL-SG1008D overview

The TL-SG1008D is TP-Link's 8-port Gigabit desktop switch. Its eight RJ45 ports each run at 10/100/1000 Mbps with auto-negotiation and auto-MDI/MDIX, so connected computers, NAS units, printers and access points link at the best common speed with either straight-through or crossover cable. Standards listed are IEEE 802.3i, 802.3u, 802.3ab and 802.3x. The AU product page shows hardware version 11, and the official product image on that page is of the version 8.0 unit.

This is the desktop-only member of TP-Link's 8-port Gigabit pair. It measures just 180 x 90 x 25.5 mm (7.1 x 3.5 x 1.0 in), it runs from an external power adapter with a 5 VDC / 0.6 A output, and TP-Link lists no physical security lock. The box contains the switch, the power adapter and an installation guide; there is no rackmount kit. If you need the same eight ports in a rack with internal power, the TL-SG1008 is the 294 mm-wide desktop/rackmount version.

Switching capacity is 16 Gbps, matching the TL-SG1008, with a 4K MAC address table and store-and-forward transmission. Jumbo frames up to 15 KB are supported, slightly below the TL-SG1008's 16 KB. Advanced features listed by TP-Link are Green Technology, 802.3x flow control, back pressure and 802.1p/DSCP QoS, with TP-Link noting that QoS applies to V7 and later hardware. Because it is unmanaged, all of this works automatically with no configuration required.

The TL-SG1008D is fanless, so it is silent on a desk. Maximum power consumption is 4.63 W (220 V/50 Hz) with maximum heat dissipation of 15.80 BTU/h. TP-Link rates it for 0 to 40 degrees C operation and -40 to 60 degrees C storage, with 10 to 90% operating and 5 to 90% storage humidity, non-condensing, and it is FCC and CE certified.

Within the range, the TL-SG1008D suits a desk, entertainment unit or small office where space is tight and a power point is nearby. Step up to the TL-SG1016D for 16 Gigabit ports, or to the TL-SG1008P if four of the ports need to deliver 802.3af/at PoE.
