The TP-Link TL-SG1008 is an 8-port Gigabit unmanaged switch that works on a desk or in a rack. It has an internal 100-240 VAC power supply, 16 Gbps of non-blocking switching capacity, an 11.9 Mpps forwarding rate, a 4K MAC table, 16 KB jumbo frames and 802.1p/DSCP QoS, runs fanless at a maximum of 4.3 W, and ships with a rackmount kit and rubber feet.

TL-SG1008 overview

The TL-SG1008 is TP-Link's 8-port Gigabit desktop/rackmount switch, which TP-Link says provides an easy way to make the transition to Gigabit Ethernet. All eight RJ45 ports run at 10/100/1000 Mbps; auto-negotiation senses whether each connected device runs at 10, 100 or 1000 Mbps and adjusts accordingly, and auto-MDI/MDIX crossover on every port removes the need for crossover cables or dedicated uplink ports. Standards listed are IEEE 802.3i, 802.3u, 802.3ab, 802.3x and 802.1p. The AU product page shows hardware version 9.

What sets the TL-SG1008 apart from the TL-SG1008D is its chassis and power. It measures 294 x 180 x 44 mm (11.6 x 7.1 x 1.7 in), runs from an internal power supply rated 100-240 VAC at 50/60 Hz, and TP-Link lists it as rack mountable. A rackmount kit and rubber feet are both in the box, along with the power cord and installation guide, so the same unit can sit on a desk or be fixed into a 19-inch rack. TP-Link says the compact shell suits desks with limited space while also being rackmountable, convenient and safe. It is fanless.

TP-Link describes a non-blocking wire-speed architecture with 16 Gbps of switching capacity for maximum data throughput, and a packet forwarding rate of 11.9 Mpps. A 4K MAC address table, which TP-Link says provides scalability, 16 KB jumbo frames and store-and-forward transmission are listed. IEEE 802.3x flow control applies in full-duplex mode, and back pressure flow control in half-duplex mode alleviates traffic congestion and helps ensure reliable data transmission. MAC address auto-learning and auto-aging and 802.1p/DSCP QoS are listed under software features.

Maximum power consumption is 4.3 W (220 V/50 Hz) with maximum heat dissipation of 14.67 BTU/h. TP-Link Green Technology automatically adjusts power consumption according to link status and cable length, TP-Link states RoHS compliance, and it says 80% of the packaging material can be recycled. Dynamic LEDs show real-time working status and support basic fault diagnosis. Cabling for 100BASE-TX and 1000BASE-T is UTP category 5, 5e or above up to 100 m, and 10BASE-T runs on UTP category 3, 4 or 5.

The TL-SG1008 is rated for 0 to 40 degrees C operation and -40 to 70 degrees C storage, with 10 to 90% operating and 5 to 90% storage humidity, non-condensing, and carries FCC, CE and RoHS certification. For a smaller desktop-only unit with an external adapter, the TL-SG1008D is the alternative; for 16 Gigabit ports in the same 294 mm width, see the TL-SG1016D.
