The TP-Link TL-SG1005LP is a 5-port Gigabit unmanaged desktop switch with four 802.3af/at PoE+ ports. Each PoE port supplies up to 30 W within a 40 W total PoE budget, from an external 53.5 VDC / 0.81 A adapter. It has 10 Gbps switching capacity, 802.1p/DSCP QoS, IGMP snooping, 16 KB jumbo frames, a metal case and a fanless design.

TL-SG1005LP overview

The TL-SG1005LP is TP-Link's 5-port Gigabit desktop switch with four PoE+ ports, which TP-Link describes as plug and play with a PoE power supply that meets the needs of diverse devices. All five RJ45 ports run at 10/100/1000 Mbps with auto-negotiation and auto-MDI/MDIX, and ports 1 to 4 also deliver power. Compliance with the 802.3af/at PoE+ standard supports up to 30 W on each PoE port. The AU product page shows hardware version 3.

The defining figure for this model is its 40 W total PoE power budget, shared across the four PoE ports. TP-Link says that budget opens up applications such as surveillance for offices, dormitories and small businesses, and that the switch is fully compatible with IP cameras, access points, IP phones, computers, printers and more. In practice, 40 W comfortably covers several low-draw devices such as fixed cameras or desk phones, but it will not run four devices at the full 30 W at once. If you need more headroom, the TL-SG1005P in the same size case has a 65 W budget, and adds Extend Mode and PoE Auto Recovery, which TP-Link does not list for the TL-SG1005LP.

Power comes from an external adapter rated at 53.5 VDC / 0.81 A, which is included along with the installation guide. Maximum power consumption is 4.12 W with no powered device connected and 47.5 W with a 40 W load attached (220 V/50 Hz), and maximum heat dissipation is 14.05 BTU/h without a load and 161.98 BTU/h with 40 W of PDs connected. Switching performance is listed at 10 Gbps capacity and 7.44 Mpps forwarding, with a 2K MAC address table, 16 KB jumbo frames and store-and-forward transmission.

Although it is unmanaged, the TL-SG1005LP handles traffic intelligently: TP-Link lists MAC address auto-learning and auto-aging, IEEE 802.3x flow control, 802.1p/DSCP QoS and IGMP snooping. TP-Link says its internal components are protected by a high-quality metal casing to ensure a long product life, and that the switch has passed an array of stringent reliability tests. It is fanless, measures 99.8 x 98 x 25 mm (3.9 x 3.9 x 1.0 in), is rated for 0 to 40 degrees C operation and -40 to 70 degrees C storage, with 10 to 90% RH operating and 5 to 90% RH storage humidity, non-condensing, and is FCC and CE certified.

Cabling follows the usual Gigabit rules: 1000BASE-T runs over UTP category 5, 5e, 6 or above up to 100 m, 100BASE-TX over UTP category 5 or 5e, and 10BASE-T over UTP category 3, 4 or 5, with EIA/TIA-568 100 ohm STP also listed to 100 m for each.
