The TP-Link TL-SF1016D is a 16-port 10/100 Mbps unmanaged desktop switch. Every RJ45 port supports auto-negotiation and auto-MDI/MDIX, it uses store-and-forward switching with 802.3x flow control and Green Technology, and it is fanless, powered by an external 5.0 VDC / 0.6 A adapter, in a 200 x 142 x 40 mm case.

TL-SF1016D overview

The TL-SF1016D is TP-Link's 16-port 10/100 Mbps desktop switch, the compact counterpart to the rackmount TL-SF1016. It provides sixteen 10/100 Mbps RJ45 ports, each with auto-negotiation and auto-MDI/MDIX, so a connected PC, printer, phone or access point links at the right speed without any configuration and either straight-through or crossover cable can be used. The AU product page shows hardware version 7, and the official gallery images are of the version 7.0 unit.

The switch is sized for a desk, shelf or small cabinet floor rather than a 19-inch rack. It measures 200 x 142 x 40 mm (7.9 x 5.6 x 1.6 in), and TP-Link lists no physical security lock slot on this model. Instead of an internal supply it runs from an external power adapter rated at 5.0 VDC / 0.6 A, which is included in the box together with the user guide. That makes it easy to place wherever a power point is available, without needing the space or mounting hardware that a rackmount chassis requires.

Switching is store-and-forward, with a 2K MAC address table. TP-Link lists Green Technology and IEEE 802.3x flow control among its advanced features; flow control helps manage congestion when a busy port is receiving more traffic than it can pass on. Because the TL-SF1016D is unmanaged, there is no web interface, VLAN set-up or controller to learn: it is plug and play. TP-Link lists compatibility with Microsoft Windows 98SE, NT, 2000, XP, Vista and Windows 7, Mac OS, NetWare, UNIX and Linux systems, which in practice means any device with a standard Ethernet port.

The design is fanless, so the switch runs silently, which suits reception desks, classrooms and home offices. Maximum power consumption is listed at 3.23 W (220 V/50 Hz) with 11.01 BTU/h maximum heat dissipation. TP-Link rates the TL-SF1016D for 0 to 40 degrees C operation, -40 to 60 degrees C storage, and 10 to 90% operating and 5 to 90% storage humidity, non-condensing. It carries FCC and CE certification.

If you need the same 16 Fast Ethernet ports in a rack, the TL-SF1016 is the 440 mm steel rackmount version with an internal 100-240 VAC supply and a larger 8K MAC table. For more ports, the TL-SF1024 offers 24 and the TL-SF1048 offers 48, both rackmount. For Gigabit speeds at 16 ports, TP-Link's TL-SG1016D is the step up.
