The TP-Link RE705X is an AX3000 mesh Wi-Fi 6 extender with 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz, using 2x2 160 MHz (HE160) on 5 GHz, 1024-QAM, OFDMA, beamforming and four high-performance amplifiers. It has a gigabit Ethernet port, a 2x2 MU-MIMO access point mode, Adaptive Path Selection, EasyMesh compatibility, three coverage levels, WPA3 and Tether app management.

RE705X overview

The RE705X is TP-Link's AX3000 mesh Wi-Fi 6 extender, built to cover every corner with fast Wi-Fi 6. Its 5 GHz band supports IEEE 802.11a/n/ac/ax at 2402 Mbps and its 2.4 GHz band supports IEEE 802.11b/g/n/ax at 574 Mbps, the two adding up to the AX3000 rating. TP-Link says Wi-Fi 6 brings faster speeds, lower latency and more connections, and that 1024-QAM gives 25% faster data throughput than last-generation Wi-Fi using 256-QAM. The extender works with any Wi-Fi router. As with all wireless ratings, these are maximum physical signal rates, and both the speed and the Wi-Fi 6 features depend on client devices that support them.

The headline feature is HE160. The RE705X supports 2x2 160 MHz on the 5 GHz band, which TP-Link says gives wider bandwidth and faster speed than the traditional 80 MHz, for higher efficiency and lower latency. Four high-performance amplifiers push strong signals to hard-to-cover areas so you can stream in 4K and game in whatever room you are in. OFDMA (orthogonal frequency division multiple access) integrates the data of different end devices for higher efficiency, beamforming finds the direction of your phone or laptop and concentrates signal strength towards it, and Adaptive Path Selection keeps the network running at top speed by automatically choosing the fastest connection path to the router. The Tether app also lets you pick between three strength levels, from keeping Wi-Fi to a single room to blanketing an entire floor.

Mesh support is EasyMesh. If dead zones remain, add another EasyMesh-compatible router or Wi-Fi extender to form whole home mesh Wi-Fi; TP-Link lists a Wi-Fi dead zone killer, smart roaming for uninterrupted streaming as you move around, and one Wi-Fi name as the advantages over a traditional router with extender. For wired devices there is one gigabit Ethernet port. Plug an Ethernet cable from your router into it and the RE705X becomes a 2x2 MU-MIMO dual band wireless access point, so it can turn a wired network point into Wi-Fi 6; Range Extender and Access Point are the listed modes.

The front panel carries power, signal, 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz indicators, and the reset button, WPS button and gigabit port are on the body. Setup and monitoring are through the TP-Link Tether app on Android or iOS, which manages TP-Link routers and range extenders. Wireless functions include radio on/off, DFS (latest firmware and hardware version required), access control, LED control, a power schedule and Wi-Fi coverage adjustment, and security covers WEP, WPA, WPA2 and WPA3. The RE705X measures 97 x 46 x 158 mm, takes 100-240 V at 50/60 Hz, draws up to 13 W and operates at 0 to 40 degrees C. In the box are the Wi-Fi Range Extender RE705X and a quick installation guide.
