The TP-Link RE655BE is a BE9300 tri-band Wi-Fi 7 range extender with signal rates of 5764 Mbps on 6 GHz, 2880 Mbps on 5 GHz and 688 Mbps on 2.4 GHz, plus Multi-Link Operation, 320 MHz channels, 4K-QAM and Multi-RUs. It has four external antennas, a 2.5 Gbps LAN port, range extender and access point modes, EasyMesh compatibility, WPA3, one-touch WPS setup and Tether app management.

RE655BE overview

The RE655BE is TP-Link's BE9300 tri-band Wi-Fi 7 range extender, adding a 6 GHz band to the usual 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz. Its specification lists IEEE 802.11be/ax on 6 GHz, 802.11be/ax/ac/n/a on 5 GHz and 802.11be/ax/n/b/g on 2.4 GHz, with signal rates of 5764 Mbps on 6 GHz, 2880 Mbps on 5 GHz and 688 Mbps on 2.4 GHz, which TP-Link totals as speeds up to 9.3 Gbps. The Wi-Fi 7 features listed are Multi-Link Operation (MLO), 320 MHz channels, 4K-QAM and Multi-RUs. TP-Link describes Wi-Fi 7 as offering accelerated throughput, lower latency, stronger anti-jamming and higher efficiency, and claims four times lower latency with MLO improving throughput and greater network capacity for more devices. Those benefits need Wi-Fi 7 clients, and the rates are maximum physical signal rates rather than measured throughput.

The 6 GHz band is the reason to choose this model over a dual-band extender. TP-Link says the 6 GHz band more than doubles the available spectrum, so devices no longer compete over the airwaves, and the clean band plus the added 320 MHz channels avoids interference from legacy devices. It sums the advantages up as more spectrum and lower latency, wider channels and more throughput, and congestion-free channels with less interference, describing the band as exclusive to your devices. The RE655BE wirelessly connects to your existing router and, through TP-Link's proprietary Wi-Fi optimisation and four optimally positioned external antennas, delivers more capacity, stronger and more reliable connections and less interference.

For wired devices there is one 2.5 Gbps LAN port. In Range Extender Mode, TP-Link suggests connecting a PC, smart TV or game console for a fast wired link. In Access Point Mode, connect the RE655BE to your router and it turns that 2.5G wired connection into a high-speed tri-band wireless signal. The RE655BE is EasyMesh-compatible: if dead zones remain, add another EasyMesh router or range extender to form a whole home multi-gigabit mesh, with TP-Link listing a dead zone killer, smart roaming and one Wi-Fi name as the benefits over a traditional router plus extender.

Setup is one touch: press the WPS button on your router and on the extender, then relocate the RE655BE to the best place using its smart signal indicator. The Tether app on Android or iOS manages TP-Link routers and range extenders, and a web interface over HTTP/HTTPS is also enabled by default. Wireless functions include LED control, access control, a power schedule and Wi-Fi coverage, and encryption is WPA/WPA2-PSK and WPA3. Transmission power is listed as below 30 dBm on 2.4 GHz, below 23 dBm on 5 GHz bands 1 and 2 and below 30 dBm on bands 3 and 4, and below 23 dBm on 6 GHz. The unit measures 107.2 x 39 x 161 mm, takes 100-240 V at 50/60 Hz, has a 23.5 W maximum power consumption and carries CE and RCM certification. The box contains the Wi-Fi 7 Range Extender RE655BE and a quick installation guide.
