The TP-Link RE605X is an AX1800 Wi-Fi 6 range extender with 1201 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz, both bands using 802.11ax. It connects wirelessly to your existing router, has two external antennas, a gigabit Ethernet port, a 2x2 MU-MIMO access point mode, WPA3, a smart signal indicator, WPS setup and Tether app management, with mesh support described by TP-Link.

RE605X overview

The RE605X is TP-Link's AX1800 Wi-Fi 6 range extender. TP-Link frames it around a familiar limitation: a single router has limited Wi-Fi coverage and always causes dead zones, so the RE605X wirelessly connects to your existing router and boosts more Wi-Fi signal throughout your home, for Wi-Fi 6 speed, capacity and coverage everywhere. TP-Link describes Wi-Fi 6 as built for today's devices, eliminating lag, endless loading and dead spots, and especially suited to bandwidth-intensive tasks such as cloud gaming and 4K UHD video, with higher speed, larger capacity and ultra-low latency as the headline benefits.

Both bands are Wi-Fi 6. The 5 GHz radio supports IEEE 802.11a/n/ac/ax with a signal rate of 1201 Mbps, and the 2.4 GHz radio supports IEEE 802.11b/g/n/ax at 574 Mbps, adding up to the AX1800 rating. Two external antennas are fitted, and transmission power is listed under FCC as below 30 dBm on each band. TP-Link notes that maximum wireless signal rates are physical rates from the IEEE 802.11 standard; real throughput varies with the environment, network conditions and the clients connected. Security includes 64/128-bit WEP, WPA/WPA2-PSK and WPA3, so WPA3-capable routers and clients can use the newer standard.

TP-Link describes two mesh routes for this model, and it is worth knowing which applies to your router. The product overview presents TP-Link OneMesh: connect a OneMesh range extender to a OneMesh router to form a mesh network with a single Wi-Fi name, smart roaming and unified management in the Tether app, and if you already own a TP-Link router you may only need to update its firmware to the OneMesh version rather than replace it. TP-Link links to a list for checking whether your router supports OneMesh. The specification table, meanwhile, lists the RE605X's mesh technology as EasyMesh-compatible. Either way, the extender also works as a standard range extender with any Wi-Fi router.

For wired devices there is a gigabit Ethernet port, which TP-Link shows serving a 4K HDTV, a game console or a printer. Plug an Ethernet cable from your router into that port and the RE605X becomes a 2x2 MU-MIMO dual-band wireless access point; Range Extender and Access Point are the working modes. A smart signal indicator helps you choose the right outlet, and the WPS button gives easy installation. The Tether app on Android or iOS manages the extender along with TP-Link routers. Wireless functions are radio on/off, DFS (latest firmware and hardware version required), access control, LED control, a power schedule and Wi-Fi coverage. The RE605X measures 74 x 46 x 124.8 mm, draws up to 10 W, operates at 0 to 40 degrees C, and ships with a quick installation guide.
