The TP-Link RE515X is an AX1500 Wi-Fi 6 range extender with signal rates of 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and 300 Mbps on 2.4 GHz. It connects wirelessly to any Wi-Fi router to boost its signal, and has two external antennas, a gigabit Ethernet port, a built-in access point mode, EasyMesh compatibility for one-name mesh Wi-Fi with a compatible router, and Tether app management.

RE515X overview

The RE515X is TP-Link's AX1500 Wi-Fi range extender, a compact plug-in unit that brings Wi-Fi 6 to the parts of the home your router does not reach well. TP-Link's own summary is that the extender wirelessly connects to your router and boosts the Wi-Fi 6 signal throughout your home, so you can binge-watch your favourite show anywhere. It works with any Wi-Fi router. TP-Link presents Wi-Fi 6 as the technology that eliminates annoying lag, endless loading and dead spots, and lists higher speed, larger capacity and ultra-low latency as the benefits.

The two bands are not identical, and the specification is specific about it. The 5 GHz band supports IEEE 802.11a/n/ac/ax with a signal rate of 1200 Mbps, while the 2.4 GHz band supports IEEE 802.11b/g/n at 300 Mbps, so Wi-Fi 6 operation is on 5 GHz. Together they make up the AX1500 class. Two external antennas carry the signal, and transmission power is listed under CE as below 20 dBm on 2.4 GHz and below 30 dBm on 5 GHz. TP-Link's usual caveat applies: these are maximum physical signal rates, and real throughput depends on the router, distance, building materials and what the connected devices support.

There is one gigabit Ethernet port. Use it for a wired device in range extender mode, or plug an Ethernet cable from your router into it and, as TP-Link puts it, turn that wired connection into a high-speed dual band wireless signal, making the RE515X more than just a range extender. Range Extender and Access Point are the listed working modes. The RE515X is EasyMesh-compatible: if Wi-Fi dead zones remain, add an EasyMesh router to form whole home mesh Wi-Fi. TP-Link lists the benefits of an EasyMesh router and extender over a traditional router with extender as a Wi-Fi dead zone killer, Smart Roaming so streaming continues as you move around, and one Wi-Fi name.

Setup and management run through the TP-Link Tether app on Android or iOS, which handles TP-Link routers and range extenders, and the unit has a WPS button for push-button connection and a reset button. Wireless functions include enabling or disabling the radio, DFS (latest firmware and hardware version required), access control, LED control, a power schedule and Wi-Fi coverage, and security options are 64/128-bit WEP and WPA/WPA2-PSK. The RE515X measures 74 x 46 x 124.8 mm, takes 100-240 V at 50/60 Hz, has a 10 W maximum power consumption and operates at 0 to 40 degrees C in 10 to 90% non-condensing humidity. A quick installation guide comes with the extender.
