The TP-Link RE450 is an AC1750 Wi-Fi range extender for mid-size and larger homes, with 1300 Mbps on 5 GHz and 450 Mbps on 2.4 GHz from three external antennas, beamforming and MU-MIMO. It has a gigabit Ethernet port, range extender and access point modes, EasyMesh compatibility, a smart signal indicator, WPS, LED and power buttons, and Tether app management.

RE450 overview

The RE450 is TP-Link's AC1750 Wi-Fi range extender, aimed, in TP-Link's words, at the room in your mid-size or bigger home where you cannot connect to the internet. Three high-performance external antennas let the Wi-Fi transmit farther with stronger signals, and the two bands, 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, make device connections more reliable. Signal rates are 1300 Mbps on 5 GHz (IEEE 802.11a/n/ac) and 450 Mbps on 2.4 GHz (IEEE 802.11b/g/n), adding up to 1.75 Gbps. TP-Link compares that with a mainstream AC750 extender such as its RE220 at 433 Mbps plus 300 Mbps, and calls the RE450 up to 2.33 times faster. These figures are maximum signal rates; the actual result depends on your router, building and client devices.

TP-Link says the RE450 is equipped with three chipsets for high-speed data flow to phones and laptops, and that its beamforming technology sends the signal directly to your end devices. It describes the wireless design as 6-stream dual-band Wi-Fi, with MU-MIMO so more devices on both bands can share the same strength and speed at the same time, whether you are streaming at the highest settings or on a call with your whole department. Transmission power is listed as below 20 dBm on 2.4 GHz and below 23 dBm on 5 GHz.

Wired performance is the other reason to choose the RE450. Its gigabit Ethernet port supports data transfers of up to 1000 Mbps, which TP-Link notes is ten times faster than a 100 Mbps Fast Ethernet port, so a wired device that needs constant high-speed internet gets it. The RE450 supports Range Extender and Access Point modes; in access point mode a wired connection from your router becomes dual band Wi-Fi. It is also EasyMesh-compatible: if you still have dead zones, add an EasyMesh-compatible router to create whole home mesh Wi-Fi, with TP-Link listing a dead zone killer, Smart Roaming for uninterrupted streaming and one Wi-Fi name as the benefits over a traditional router plus extender.

Installation follows TP-Link's usual push-to-connect approach. The RE450 works with any standard wireless router; press the extender's connect button followed by the router's WPS button, if your router has one, and once connected you can move the RE450 anywhere within the router's wireless range without further configuration. The smart signal indicator shows blue for a strong signal and red for a weak one. The RE450 has WPS, reset, LED and power buttons, and the Tether app on Android or iOS manages it alongside TP-Link routers. Wireless functions include radio on/off, DFS (latest firmware and hardware version required), access control, LED control, a power schedule and Wi-Fi coverage, with 64/128-bit WEP and WPA-PSK/WPA2-PSK security. It measures 163 x 76.4 x 66.5 mm, draws up to 10 W, is listed with an AU plug among its plug types, and comes with a quick installation guide.
