The TP-Link RE315 is an AC1200 mesh Wi-Fi range extender with 867 Mbps on 5 GHz and 300 Mbps on 2.4 GHz. It is EasyMesh-compatible, uses Adaptive Path Selection to pick the fastest path back to the router, and has two external antennas, one 10/100 Mbps Ethernet port, a built-in 2x2 MIMO access point mode, a smart signal indicator, one-touch WPS setup and Tether app management.

RE315 overview

TP-Link sells the RE315 as an AC1200 mesh Wi-Fi extender, and it opens its pitch with the problems most households recognise: no Wi-Fi in the bedroom, balcony or bathroom, connections dropping as you walk around, thick walls and floors weakening the signal, and too many network cables. A single router has limited coverage and always leaves some dead zones, TP-Link says, so the RE315 wirelessly connects to your existing router and expands its Wi-Fi into the areas it cannot reach on its own. It works with any Wi-Fi router.

The RE315 is dual band, supporting IEEE 802.11a/n/ac on 5 GHz and IEEE 802.11b/g/n on 2.4 GHz, with signal rates of 867 Mbps on 5 GHz and 300 Mbps on 2.4 GHz for a total of up to 1200 Mbps. TP-Link says transmitting on both bands doubles the performance of each and lets you keep more devices connected at the same time, and suggests using 2.4 GHz for email and web browsing and 5 GHz for gaming and HD streaming. Adaptive Path Selection keeps the network running at optimal speeds by automatically choosing the fastest connection path to the router, which TP-Link describes as ideal for networks crowded with many devices and applications. Two external antennas are fitted, and transmission power is listed as up to 20 dBm on 2.4 GHz and up to 30 dBm on 5 GHz.

Mesh is what separates the RE315 from a basic extender. It is EasyMesh-compatible, so if dead zones remain you can add another EasyMesh-compatible router to form a whole home mesh Wi-Fi network. TP-Link lists three benefits of an EasyMesh router and extender combination over a traditional router with extender: it acts as a Wi-Fi dead zone killer, Smart Roaming keeps streaming uninterrupted as you move around the home, and there is one Wi-Fi name, so no more switching between network names. For wired devices there is a 10/100 Mbps Ethernet port, which TP-Link pictures serving a 4K HDTV, a game console or a printer. Plug an Ethernet cable from your router into that port and the RE315 becomes a 2x2 MIMO dual band wireless access point; Range Extender and Access Point are the listed working modes.

Setup can be done with one touch. TP-Link's two steps are: press the WPS button on your router and, within two minutes, press the WPS button on the RE315 so it connects to the network; then place the RE315 in the best location without reconfiguring it. If your router does not support WPS, connect the extender through the Tether app or the web UI instead. The smart signal indicator shows the signal strength from your existing router at a glance, white for a strong signal and red for a weak one, meaning it is too far from the router. Wireless functions include enabling or disabling the radio, DFS (latest firmware and hardware version required), access control, LED control, a power schedule and Wi-Fi coverage, with 64/128-bit WEP and WPA/WPA2-PSK encryption. The RE315 measures 89 x 35 x 124.1 mm, draws up to 9.5 W and operates at 0 to 40 degrees C. The box holds the RE315 and a quick installation guide.
