The TP-Link RE205 is an AC750 dual band Wi-Fi range extender that connects to your router wirelessly and pushes its signal into rooms it cannot reach, with 300 Mbps on 2.4 GHz and 433 Mbps on 5 GHz. It has two external antennas, one 10/100 Mbps Ethernet port, a built-in access point mode, an Intelligent Signal light for placement and setup in the TP-Link Tether app, and it plugs straight into an Australian power outlet.

RE205 overview

The RE205 is TP-Link's AC750 Wi-Fi range extender, built for homes where the router's signal fades before it reaches a bedroom, a back room or a home office. TP-Link describes how it works in plain terms: the RE205 connects to your Wi-Fi router wirelessly, strengthening and expanding the router's signal into areas it cannot reach on its own, while reducing signal interference to keep Wi-Fi coverage reliable throughout your home or office. TP-Link states that it works with all Wi-Fi routers, although it also notes that the extender may not be compatible with routers or gateways running firmware that has been altered, is based on open-source programs, or is non-standard or outdated.

It is a dual band extender. The 2.4 GHz band carries up to 300 Mbps and the 5 GHz band up to 433 Mbps, which together make up the AC750 rating, and TP-Link says this lets you keep more devices connected at the same time. Its suggestion for using the two bands is practical: use 2.4 GHz to send an email or browse the web, and 5 GHz for gaming and HD streaming. The reception sensitivity table lists 802.11a and 802.11ac rates on 5 GHz (down to -94 dBm at 6 Mbps in 11a) and 802.11g and 802.11n rates on 2.4 GHz. Two external antennas sit on either side of the body. TP-Link points out that these are maximum wireless signal rates, the physical rates derived from the IEEE 802.11 specifications, and that real throughput and coverage depend on building materials, obstacles, interference, traffic volume, product location and the capability of each client device.

Placement matters with any extender, and the RE205 has an Intelligent Signal light so you can find the best location at a glance; the light shows red when the extender is too far away from the router. Once it is on the network you can move it to a better socket within range. For wired devices there is one 10/100 Mbps Ethernet port (RJ45). In range extender mode that port can connect a single wired device. Plug an Ethernet cable from your router into the same port instead and the RE205 becomes a dual band wireless access point, turning a wired internet connection into Wi-Fi, which TP-Link describes as making it more than a wireless range extender. Range Extender and Access Point are the two working modes listed.

Setup and management use TP-Link's free Tether app on Android or iOS, which TP-Link says gets the extender running in minutes and also gives access to advanced network management. A WPS button and a reset button are on the unit. The wireless functions listed are enable or disable the wireless radio, DFS (which needs the latest firmware and hardware version), access control, LED control, a power schedule and a Wi-Fi coverage setting, and security options are 64/128-bit WEP and WPA-PSK/WPA2-PSK. The RE205 uses an AU plug, takes 100-240 V at 50/60 Hz, draws up to 7.3 W and measures 80 x 78 x 77 mm. It is rated to operate at 0 to 40 degrees C and 10 to 90% non-condensing humidity, carries CE, FCC and RoHS certification, and comes in the box with a quick installation guide.

Key features

AC750 dual band Wi-Fi

Last reviewed October 2026.

TP-Link rates it as AC750: up to 433 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 300 Mbps on 2.4 GHz. These are maximum wireless signal rates; real throughput depends on your router, distance and environment.

TP-Link says it works with all Wi-Fi routers. It notes it may not be compatible with routers or gateways running altered, open-source based, non-standard or outdated firmware.

Yes, one 10/100 Mbps Ethernet port (RJ45). It is a Fast Ethernet port, not gigabit.

Yes. Plug an Ethernet cable from your router into its Ethernet port and it turns the wired connection into a dual band wireless access point.

Use the Intelligent Signal light. It shows red when the extender is too far away from the router, so move it closer until the light indicates a good connection.

Use TP-Link's free Tether app on Android or iOS, or the WPS button on the unit. TP-Link says app setup takes minutes.

Yes. TP-Link Australia lists an AU plug type and 100-240 V, 50/60 Hz input.

Wireless security options are 64/128-bit WEP and WPA-PSK/WPA2-PSK, and access control is listed among the wireless functions.
