The TP-Link POE4818G is an Omada 48 V 18 W passive PoE adapter. It supplies 48 VDC at up to 18 W plus Gigabit data on one cable, through a shielded 10/100/1000 Mbps data in port and a shielded passive PoE port, from a 100-240 V AC input. TP-Link recommends it for its passive PoE Omada products, naming the EAP245 V4.0, EAP225 V5.0 and EAP650-Outdoor V1.0.

POE4818G overview

The POE4818G is TP-Link's Omada 48 V 18 W passive PoE adapter. TP-Link describes it as a way to simultaneously supply power and transmit data to a passive PoE device, and it powers TP-Link products that support 48 V passive PoE. Unlike an 802.3af/at injector, passive PoE does not negotiate: the adapter applies a fixed 48 VDC, so it must only be used with devices specified for 48 V passive PoE. Its maximum output is 18 W. That is 6 W more, and twice the voltage, of the 24 V POE2412G, while the larger POE4824G in the same datasheet raises the output to 24 W at 48 VDC.

TP-Link lists the devices it recommends the POE4818G for: the Omada EAP245 V4.0, EAP225 V5.0 and EAP650-Outdoor V1.0. Hardware version matters here, because passive PoE support can differ between versions of the same access point, so check the version on your device label against this list. The POE4818G is typically used where there is no PoE switch, for example a single access point fed from a router port, or where an outdoor access point is fed through a cable from an indoor comms cabinet.

The AU page lists one 10/100/1000 Mbps RJ45 shielded data in port, one 10/100/1000 Mbps RJ45 shielded passive PoE port and one 100 to 240 V, 50/60 Hz AC power input port. The datasheet adds auto-negotiation and auto MDI/MDIX, and TP-Link highlights that the adapter can auto-determine the necessary power requirements and supports Gigabit speed. Cabling is UTP category 3, 4 or 5 (or EIA/TIA-568 100 ohm STP) up to 100 m for 10BASE-T, UTP category 5 or 5e up to 100 m for 100BASE-TX and UTP category 5, 5e or 6 up to 100 m for 1000BASE-T.

TP-Link highlights its convenient wall-mounting brackets, which allow it to be easily installed on a wall, and wall mounting kits come in the box with a power cord. It measures 85.8 x 43.9 x 35.0 mm (3.4 x 1.7 x 1.4 in) on the AU page; the datasheet gives 31.9 mm height without the bracket and 35 mm with it. The PWR LED shows power status. Operating temperature is 0 to 40 degrees C, storage -40 to 70 degrees C, with 10 to 90% operating and 5 to 90% storage humidity, non-condensing. The AU page lists FCC, CE and RoHS certification. Setup is plug and play, with no configuration required.

POE4818G compared

The POE4818G sits between the 24 V POE2412G and the higher-output POE4824G in TP-Link's passive PoE adapter datasheet. It shares the POE2412G's compact housing but outputs 48 V; the POE4824G keeps 48 V and lifts output to 24 W in a larger case.
