The TP-Link POE2412G (TL-POE2412G) is a 24 V passive PoE adapter. It puts 24 VDC at up to 12 W onto an Ethernet cable alongside Gigabit data, using two 10/100/1000 Mbps RJ45 ports (data in, power plus data out) and a 100-240 V, 50/60 Hz AC input. It is for devices that take 24 V passive PoE, not 802.3af/at PoE, and it is plug and play with a wall-mount bracket included.

POE2412G overview

The POE2412G, also listed by TP-Link as the TL-POE2412G, is a 24 V passive PoE adapter. TP-Link says it can be used to simultaneously supply power and transmit data to a passive PoE device. Passive PoE is a fixed-voltage supply rather than the negotiated IEEE 802.3af/at standard, so the adapter must match the voltage the powered device expects. The POE2412G delivers 24 VDC at a maximum of 12 W, which suits equipment that TP-Link or another vendor specifies for 24 V passive PoE. If your device needs 48 V passive PoE, TP-Link's POE4818G (48 VDC, up to 18 W) and POE4824G (48 VDC, up to 24 W) are the matching adapters from the same datasheet; for standards-based 802.3af/at/bt devices, a PoE switch or standards-based injector is required instead.

Connections are simple. There are two 10/100/1000 Mbps RJ45 ports with auto-negotiation and auto MDI/MDIX, one taking data in from your switch or router and one sending power plus data out to the device, and one AC power input port rated 100 to 240 V at 50/60 Hz. Gigabit speed is supported, so the adapter does not slow a Gigabit link down. TP-Link lists cabling as UTP category 3, 4 or 5 (or EIA/TIA-568 100 ohm STP) up to 100 m for 10BASE-T, UTP category 5 or 5e up to 100 m for 100BASE-TX, and UTP category 5, 5e or 6 up to 100 m for 1000BASE-T. TP-Link also highlights that the adapter can auto-determine the necessary power requirements, and it is plug and play with no configuration.

The housing has a single PWR LED and a convenient wall-mount design; wall mounting kits and a power cord are included. The AU product page lists dimensions of 85.8 x 43.9 x 35 mm (3.4 x 1.7 x 1.4 in); the datasheet clarifies that this is with the mounting bracket, and the adapter is 85.8 x 43.9 x 31.9 mm without it. Operating temperature is 0 to 40 degrees C (32 to 104 degrees F), storage is -40 to 70 degrees C, operating humidity is 10 to 90% non-condensing and storage humidity 5 to 90% non-condensing. The AU page lists FCC, CE and RoHS certification. Because this is an indoor adapter, it should be located inside, with the single Ethernet cable carrying power and data on to the device.
