The TP-Link TL-PA411 KIT is an AV600 powerline starter kit of two mini TL-PA411 adapters that turn your home's electrical wiring into a wired network. HomePlug AV gives physical rates of up to 600 Mbps across up to 300 m of circuit, each adapter has one 10/100 Mbps Ethernet port, and setup is plug and play with a Pair button for 128-bit AES encryption.

TL-PA411 KIT overview

The TL-PA411 KIT is TP-Link's AV600 powerline starter kit, and it contains two TL-PA411 adapters, because powerline adapters always work in sets of two or more on the same electrical circuit. TP-Link describes it as transforming your home's existing electrical circuit into a high-speed network that brings a wired connection to anywhere there is a power outlet, without new wires or drilling, and with the network passing through walls and floors. It follows the HomePlug AV standard, with high-speed data transfer rates of up to 600 Mbps over a range of up to 300 m, and TP-Link says it causes no interference with electrical or electronic equipment.

Setup takes two steps: connect one adapter to your router with the supplied Ethernet cable, then plug the other adapter in wherever you need wired internet and connect your device to it. No configuration is required. For a more secure network, press the Pair button on each adapter to set up 128-bit AES encryption. Each adapter has one 10/100 Mbps Ethernet port and Power, Powerline and Ethernet LEDs, and uses OFDM modulation over the wiring. The kit is compatible with HomePlug AV and AV2 powerline adapters and with routers generally, although TP-Link notes possible issues with routers running altered or non-standard firmware.

TP-Link is clear that 600 Mbps is the theoretical maximum physical-layer rate. Actual data speeds are limited by each adapter's 10/100 Mbps Ethernet port and by network conditions such as data traffic, electrical noise, wiring quality and distance, so the kit suits HD streaming, online gaming and downloads on devices that would otherwise rely on weak Wi-Fi. The two adapters must be on the same electrical circuit to communicate.

The TL-PA411 is a miniature design, which TP-Link says is smaller than most powerline adapters on the market and plugs into the socket without blocking the neighbouring outlet. Each measures 65 x 52 x 28.5 mm. Power-Saving Mode switches the adapters into a low-power state when connected devices are off or disconnected, reducing consumption by up to 85%; maximum draw is 2.5 W, typical 2.3 W and standby 0.36 W. Operating temperature is 0 °C to 40 °C. TP-Link's support page lists versions V3, V4 and V5. In the box are two TL-PA411 AV600 powerline adapters, an RJ45 Ethernet cable and a quick installation guide.
