The TP-Link TL-MR6400 is a 300 Mbps Wireless N 4G LTE router with a nano SIM slot, LTE Cat4 downloads of up to 150 Mbps and uploads of up to 50 Mbps. It shares the connection with up to 32 Wi-Fi devices, has three LAN ports plus a LAN/WAN port, two detachable LTE antennas, PPTP, OpenVPN and IPSec VPN, QoS and 3G/4G WAN failover.

TL-MR6400 overview

The TL-MR6400 is the fuller-featured of TP-Link's 300 Mbps Wireless N 4G LTE routers. Like the TL-MR100 it combines an integrated 4G LTE modem, a nano SIM card slot and a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi router, and TP-Link says you simply insert the SIM and turn it on. It notes the router needs an activated SIM card without a PIN lock, and the quick installation guide explains how to unlock one. The LTE side is Cat4, rated at 150 Mbps download and 50 Mbps upload, and the connection can be shared with up to 32 wireless devices at the same time. TP-Link backs SIM compatibility in more than 100 countries with years of field tests.

TP-Link lists 4G support for FDD-LTE Cat4 B1, B3, B7, B8 and B20 (2100, 1800, 2600, 900 and 800 MHz) and TDD-LTE B38, B40 and B41 (2600, 2300 and 2500 MHz), with 3G DC-HSDPA, HSPA+, HSPA and UMTS on B1 and B8 (2100 and 900 MHz). Check that your carrier uses these bands where you are, because B28 is not in the MR6400's list. Two detachable external 4G LTE antennas connect to two SMA-F antenna interfaces, so the supplied antennas can be swapped for others suited to the site.

Where the TL-MR6400 goes further is wired and network features. It has three 10/100 Mbps LAN ports and one 10/100 Mbps LAN/WAN port, which TP-Link says give four ports for wired devices such as desktop computers. With the LAN/WAN port connected to a cable, fibre or DSL modem it works as a standard wireless router, and its WAN and 3G/4G failover backup strategy keeps an internet connection running if one link drops. VPN is built in: PPTP, OpenVPN and IPSec as both server and client. QoS prioritises chosen devices, and access control includes parental controls, local management control and a host list.

Wi-Fi is 2.4 GHz IEEE 802.11b/g/n at 300 Mbps, with transmission power under 20 dBm, a 2.4 GHz guest network and 64/128-bit WEP, WPA/WPA2 and WPA-PSK/WPA2-PSK security. The firewall offers DoS protection, SPI firewall and IP and MAC address binding, and dynamic DNS covers TP-Link DDNS, DynDns and NO-IP alongside IPv4 and IPv6. It measures 174 x 124.5 x 33.5 mm and has WPS/Wi-Fi and Reset buttons. TP-Link's page lists versions V3, V5, V5.3 and V7.20. In the box are the TL-MR6400, a 1.5 m power adapter, an RJ45 Ethernet cable and a quick installation guide.
