The TP-Link TL-MR100 is a 300 Mbps Wireless N 4G LTE router with a built-in modem and nano SIM slot. Insert an activated SIM and it shares a 4G LTE connection with up to 32 Wi-Fi devices, with LTE downloads of up to 150 Mbps, two detachable external LTE antennas, a LAN/WAN port for wired broadband and WAN failover.

TL-MR100 overview

The TL-MR100 is TP-Link's compact 300 Mbps Wireless N 4G LTE router: an integrated 4G LTE modem, a built-in nano SIM card slot and a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi router in one box. TP-Link's pitch is plug and play: insert a SIM card, turn the router on and it shares the 4G connection, with no configuration needed. It says compatibility with SIM cards in more than 100 countries is backed by years of field testing. LTE download speeds reach up to 150 Mbps, and you can share the connection with up to 32 Wi-Fi devices such as phones, tablets and laptops at the same time. TP-Link pictures it in conference rooms, remote areas, temporary stores and holiday villas.

The 4G network support listed for the TL-MR100 is FDD-LTE B1, B3, B5, B7, B8, B20 and B28 (2100, 1800, 850, 2600, 900, 800 and 750 MHz) and TDD-LTE B38, B40 and B41 (2600, 2300 and 2500 MHz), with 3G HSPA/UMTS on B1, B5 and B8 (2100, 850 and 900 MHz). Two detachable external 4G LTE antennas provide the cellular reception, and TP-Link describes them as advanced LTE antennas for stable and efficient connections to every device. Because they are detachable, they can be swapped for other antennas where reception needs it.

Wi-Fi is single-band 2.4 GHz IEEE 802.11b/g/n with a 300 Mbps signal rate and transmission power under 20 dBm. Wireless functions include radio on/off, a wireless schedule, WMM and wireless statistics, and security covers 64/128-bit WEP, WPA/WPA2 and WPA-PSK/WPA2-PSK. For wired devices there is one 10/100 Mbps LAN port and one 10/100 Mbps LAN/WAN port. Plug an Ethernet cable from a broadband modem into the LAN/WAN port and the TL-MR100 runs in Wireless Router mode when you cannot get a 4G connection, and WAN failover is supported between the two.

Software features include parental controls to block harmful websites, set surfing time limits, see which sites children use or pause the internet, plus a separate 2.4 GHz guest network. There is an IPv4 SPI firewall with IP and MAC address binding, DHCP server with client list and address reservation, ALG, virtual server, port triggering, UPnP and DMZ, DynDns and NO-IP dynamic DNS, IPv4 and IPv6, and local and remote management. The router measures 154 x 114 x 36 mm, has a WPS/Reset button and runs from 0 °C to 40 °C. TP-Link's support page lists hardware versions V1, V1.20, V2 and V3. In the box are the TL-MR100, a power adapter, an RJ45 Ethernet cable and a quick installation guide.
