The TP-Link TL-FC111A-20 is a 10/100 Mbps WDM media converter that converts between electrical and optical signals. It has one 100 Mbps SC fibre port and one 10/100 Mbps RJ45 port with auto-MDI/MDIX, and uses wavelength division multiplexing to transmit at 1550 nm and receive at 1310 nm over one single-mode fibre for up to 20 km. Partner it with a 1310 nm TX / 1550 nm RX unit such as the TL-FC111B-20 or TL-FC111PB-20. It complies with IEEE 802.3, 802.3i and 802.3u, auto-negotiates half or full duplex, works standalone or in the TL-FC1420 rack, and is powered by a 5 V / 0.6 A adapter.

The TP-Link TL-FC111A-20 is a 10/100 Mbps WDM media converter with one 100 Mbps SC fibre port and one 10/100 Mbps RJ45 port. It uses WDM to send and receive on a single strand of 9/125 um single-mode fibre for up to 20 km, transmitting at 1550 nm and receiving at 1310 nm, so it pairs with a unit that does the opposite, such as the TL-FC111B-20 or the PoE-equipped TL-FC111PB-20. It runs from a 5 V / 0.6 A adapter and has no PoE output.

TL-FC111A-20 overview

The TL-FC111A-20 is TP-Link's 10/100 Mbps WDM media converter, the A side of a single-fibre pair. It provides one 100 Mbps SC fibre port and one 10/100 Mbps RJ45 port (auto-MDI/MDIX) and converts between the electrical signal on copper and the optical signal on fibre. TP-Link's series datasheet says the TL-FC111A-20, TL-FC111B-20 and TL-FC111PB-20 are 100M media converters for long-distance data transmission in commercial scenarios such as park security monitoring and wireless networking. The converter complies with IEEE 802.3, 802.3i and the 802.3u 10/100BASE-TX and 100BASE-FX standards, and auto-negotiates half-duplex or full-duplex transfer mode.

WDM (wavelength division multiplexing) is what lets the TL-FC111A-20 work over one strand. TP-Link explains that it sends and receives data at distances of up to 20 km with only a single-mode fibre, which TP-Link says saves half of the cable deployment cost. The TL-FC111A-20 transmits at 1550 nm and receives at 1310 nm. That means the device at the other end must transmit at 1310 nm and receive at 1550 nm, and TP-Link names the TL-FC111B-20 as one product that can cooperate with the TL-FC111A-20; the series datasheet lists the TL-FC111PB-20 with the same 1310 nm TX / 1550 nm RX wavelengths. Two converters of this same model will not talk to each other over a single fibre, because both would transmit on the same wavelength.

On the cabling side, the fibre port is rated for 9/125 um single-mode fibre up to 20 km, and the RJ45 port for 100BASE-TX over 2-pair UTP or STP of Category 5 or above up to 100 m. Status is shown on PWR and Link/Act LEDs. Power comes from an external 5 V / 0.6 A adapter, which is in the box with the converter and an installation guide. This is the key difference from the TL-FC111PB-20: the TL-FC111A-20 does not provide PoE on its RJ45 port, whereas the TL-FC111PB-20 has an 802.3af PoE output and a 48 V adapter. If the far-end device needs power over the Ethernet cable, put the TL-FC111PB-20 at that end and the TL-FC111A-20 at the head end.

The TL-FC111A-20 measures 94.5 x 73 x 27 mm. TP-Link says it can be used as a standalone device with no rack required, or used with TP-Link's TL-FC1420 rack, with auto-MDI/MDI-X on the TX port and duplex mode negotiated automatically. It is rated for operation from 0 to 50 degrees C and storage from -40 to 70 degrees C, with 10 to 90% RH operating and 5 to 90% RH storage humidity, non-condensing. Typical uses are linking a remote building, gatehouse or camera pole back to the main network over one spare single-mode fibre, where copper cannot reach the distance.
