The TP-Link ER701-5G-Outdoor is an Omada 5G outdoor gateway that brings 5G or 4G broadband to sites where wired internet is not practical, or adds a cellular backup to an indoor gateway. It reaches up to 7.01 Gbps down and 1.25 Gbps up on 5G SA, uses nine internal cellular antennas and a dual Nano SIM slot for failover, and connects and draws power over a single 2.5G PoE-in port. The IP66 enclosure mounts on a wall, pole or window, and the Omada app guides antenna alignment.

ER701-5G-Outdoor overview

The ER701-5G-Outdoor is TP-Link's Omada 5G Outdoor Gateway. TP-Link says it brings instant connectivity to areas where wired broadband is not practical, serving either as primary 5G/4G broadband access or as an internet backup for an indoor gateway, and names remote deployments, temporary sites and hard-to-wire facilities as the typical uses. Mounting it outside, on a wall, a pole or a window, places the modem where the cellular signal is strongest, while a single Ethernet cable carries data and power back inside to the network.

Cellular performance is the headline. TP-Link lists 5G NR standalone (SA) speeds of up to 7.01 Gbps downlink and 1.25 Gbps uplink, non-standalone (NSA) speeds of 4.5 Gbps and 730 Mbps, and LTE speeds of 1.6 Gbps and 211 Mbps. It credits Omada Ultra5G technology, which it defines as the R16 standard with sub-6 GHz operation and 4x4 MIMO, and states the 7.01 Gbps figure is 46.7 times faster than 4G LTE. Supported 5G bands are N1/N3/N5/N7/N8/N20/N26/N28/N38/N40/N41/N75/N76/N77/N78; 4G FDD bands are B1/B3/B5/B7/B8/B20/B26/B28/B32; 4G TDD bands are B38/B40/B41/B42/B43; and 3G WCDMA covers B1/B5/B8. N75, N76 and B32 are downlink only. Actual speeds depend on the carrier, plan and signal.

Inside are nine high-gain directional internal cellular antennas and a 2.2 GHz quad-core CPU, which TP-Link says gives high-speed processing with ultra-low latency, plus 4 GB eMMC flash and 2 GB LPDDR4x memory. Installation is guided by the Omada app, which shows real-time signal strength so the gateway can be aligned with the nearest tower. One dual Nano SIM slot holds two SIM cards, and TP-Link describes dual SIM failover as keeping the business up and running during failover, backup WAN and network switching scenarios. SMS send and receive is supported.

The only wired interface is one 2.5G RJ45 port that supports 10BASE-T through 2500BASE-T over category 5, 5e or 6 cable up to 100 m. That same port takes power, from 802.3at PoE (42 to 57 V, 0.6 A) or 48 V / 0.375 A passive PoE, and a passive PoE adapter is supplied. Maximum power consumption is 15.3 W. The enclosure is fully sealed and IP66 rated; TP-Link describes it as dustproof, waterproof and built to endure extreme outdoor conditions. It operates from -30 to 60 degrees C with 5 to 95% non-condensing humidity, has 6 kV surge protection, and measures 183 x 110 x 36 mm. MTBF is listed at 900,444.67 hours at 25 degrees C.

As an Omada gateway it provides DHCP and DHCPv6 PD (standalone), 802.1Q VLAN, bridge VLAN, QoS, IP-based bandwidth control and session limits, virtual server, NAT-DMZ, UPnP and ALGs, static routing and OSPF in standalone mode, and holds 500,000 concurrent sessions with 6,100 new sessions per second. Security includes stateful ACL, deep packet inspection, URL filtering, DNSSEC/DoH/DoT DNS proxy, flood defence and IP-MAC binding, and web authentication supports hotspot portals with local user, voucher, SMS and RADIUS options. A single internal Wi-Fi antenna provides a 150 Mbps 2.4 GHz SSID for setup. Management is through Omada Central (cloud-based), Omada hardware and software controllers and the Omada app, or standalone with web, SNMP and CLI. The AU product page lists CE, NCC and BSMI certification. In the box are the gateway, a passive PoE adapter, mounting kits, a waterproof kit and a quick installation guide; the datasheet also lists an Ethernet cable.
