The TP-Link EAP673-Extender is an Omada AX5400 plug-in Wi-Fi 6 mesh extender. It plugs straight into a 100-240 V wall outlet, joins an Omada mesh to fill dead zones, and delivers up to 4804 Mbps on 5 GHz (4x4 MU-MIMO) and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz (2x2). A Gigabit Ethernet port lets it run as a standalone access point when a cable is available, and it is managed through Omada SDN controllers or the Omada app.

EAP673-Extender overview

The EAP673-Extender is TP-Link's Omada AX5400 Wall Plate Wi-Fi 6 Extender, listed on the AU site as the AX5400 Mesh Wi-Fi 6 Extender. TP-Link describes it as a high-performance mesh extender with flexible plug-and-play deployment, designed to eliminate signal dead zones in offices, retail, hotels and MDUs. Rather than drawing power over Ethernet like a ceiling access point, it plugs straight into a standard 100-240 V, 50/60 Hz outlet, so it can be added wherever there is a power point and no network cabling. TP-Link calls this overcoming cabling challenges: stable, high-performance coverage with no extra wires needed.

On the radio side, the 5 GHz band is 4x4 uplink/downlink MU-MIMO with four spatial streams, reaching 4804 Mbps in 802.11ax HE160, while 2.4 GHz is 2x2 with up to 574 Mbps; TP-Link combines these as 5.4 Gbps Wi-Fi 6. Supported Wi-Fi technologies are 160 MHz bandwidth, uplink/downlink OFDMA, MU-MIMO and 1024-QAM, with transmit beamforming and DFS, and the datasheet adds Zero-Wait DFS and EoGRE tunnelling. TP-Link says 1024-QAM gives 25% higher data rates than Wi-Fi 5; these Wi-Fi 6 features need clients that support them. Signal rates are physical maximums derived from IEEE 802.11 specifications and actual throughput varies.

Four external high-gain antennas do the coverage work: TP-Link calls the extender a Wi-Fi dead-zone killer and lists coverage of up to 140 square metres (1500 sq ft) coverage being a laboratory figure that TP-Link does not guarantee, and 250+ concurrent clients, which TP-Link notes is generally more than real capacity. The AU product page lists the antennas as 2 x 3 dBi for 2.4 GHz and 4 x 5 dBi for 5 GHz, while the datasheet lists 2 x 5 dBi and 4 x 6 dBi external omnidirectional antennas; the figures differ between the two TP-Link sources. Omada mesh and 802.11k/v/r roaming, with non-stick roaming, ping-pong suppression and AI roaming at Layer 2, move clients to the strongest signal as people walk around.

There is one 10/100/1000 Mbps Ethernet port. In mesh mode the extender links wirelessly to an Omada access point; plug a cable into the port and its built-in AP mode creates a new Wi-Fi access point, which TP-Link says avoids the need for PoE switches or infrastructure renovations. The datasheet lists AP, repeater and mesh operating modes, standalone mesh support and a Bluetooth Low Energy 5.2 IoT radio. Power consumption is 16.5 W with both radios active (18 W maximum on the product page) and 6.7 W idle. Ethernet surge protection is plus or minus 2 kV and ESD protection is 8 kV air and 4 kV contact discharge. The unit measures 160 x 80 x 37.8 mm and weighs 0.44 kg.

Management follows the rest of the Omada range. The EAP673-Extender is adopted through Omada SDN auto-discovery and one-click setup, and can be managed by Omada hardware, software and cloud-based controllers; the datasheet lists Omada Controller V5.14.25 and above, Omada Essential V5.14.25 and above and Omada App V4.24 and above. Cloud access requires an Omada controller, and zero-touch provisioning requires the cloud-based controller. Standalone web management, SSH, SNMP v1/v2c/v3, syslog and management VLAN are available. Security includes WPA/WPA2/WPA3 Personal and Enterprise, Enhanced Open, PPSK, 802.1X, MAC authentication, client isolation, rogue AP detection and captive portal authentication. It is rated for 0 to 40 degrees C, and TP-Link lists CE, FCC, IC and UL on the product page, with RCM and SAA in the datasheet. The box contains the extender and an installation guide.
