The TP-Link EAP650 D120-Outdoor is an Omada directional AX3000 Wi-Fi 6 indoor/outdoor access point for warehouses and outdoor areas such as yards, swimming pools and parks. It lists 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz, built-in 120° high-gain directional antennas, an IP68 weatherproof enclosure with a -30 to 70 °C operating range, and a gigabit port powered by 802.3at PoE+ or 48 V passive PoE, managed through Omada SDN.

EAP650 D120-Outdoor overview

The EAP650 D120-Outdoor is TP-Link's Omada directional AX3000 Wi-Fi 6 indoor/outdoor access point. TP-Link's datasheet describes it as providing wide and extended outdoor network connections, suitable for warehouses and outdoor scenarios such as yards, swimming pools and parks. It is dual-band 4-stream Wi-Fi 6 with signal rates of 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz, up to 3.0 Gbps combined. These are maximum wireless signal rates, the physical rates derived from the IEEE 802.11 standard; TP-Link notes actual throughput and coverage are not guaranteed and vary with network conditions, client limitations and the environment. Each band runs 2x2 uplink/downlink MU-MIMO with two spatial streams, along with uplink/downlink OFDMA and 1024-QAM. Supported channel widths are 20/40 MHz on 2.4 GHz and 20/40/80/160 MHz on 5 GHz, subject to country-specific restrictions. Wi-Fi 6 features such as OFDMA and 1024-QAM need clients that support them, and the datasheet lists MLO as not supported.

What sets this model apart is its antenna. It has built-in high-gain directional antennas, two 8 dBi on 2.4 GHz and two 10 dBi on 5 GHz, with a beamwidth of 120° horizontal and 30° vertical, so the signal is aimed across an area rather than radiated in every direction. TP-Link's AU page lists coverage of 200+ m on 2.4 GHz and 500+ m on 5 GHz; coverage is calculated from laboratory testing and is not guaranteed, varying with client limitations and environmental factors. The page lists 250+ concurrent clients, noting that actual capacity depends on the wireless environment and client traffic and is generally less than the maximum number of client connections; the datasheet lists 256 associated stations and up to 16 SSIDs, eight on each band. Beamforming, band steering, load balance, airtime fairness and automatic channel assignment help share the airtime.

The enclosure is built for harsh sites. TP-Link describes complete dustproof protection and the ability to withstand prolonged submersion in water under its IP68 rating, with 6 kV lightning protection on the Ethernet port and an operating temperature range of -30 to 70 °C. The single gigabit Ethernet port accepts 802.3at PoE+ or 48 V passive PoE, so power and data run over one cable; maximum power consumption is listed as 12.5 W (EU) or 14.7 W (US), and 6.6 W idle in the datasheet. Pole and wall mounting kits are included, and an optional APM-100 bracket, purchased separately, adds vertical and horizontal adjustment of plus or minus 45°. The unit measures 207.5 x 58 x 230 mm and weighs 1.4 kg, and it also has Bluetooth (BLE 5.2).

As part of Omada SDN, the EAP650 D120-Outdoor works with Omada switches, gateways and controllers, with one-click adoption and automatic device discovery. Centralised management is available through the Omada Hardware Controller, Software Controller, Cloud-Based Controller and the Omada app; the datasheet lists Omada Controller and Omada Essential V5.15 and above and Omada App V4.25 and above. Omada Mesh, seamless roaming (802.11k/v/r), captive portal and cloud access require an Omada controller, and zero-touch provisioning requires the Omada Cloud-Based Controller. It can also be managed standalone through the web interface, SSH and SNMP v1/v2c/v3, and operates in AP, repeater and mesh modes. Security covers WPA/WPA2/WPA3 Personal and Enterprise, Enhanced Open, 802.1X, MAC authentication, RADIUS accounting, PPSK, SSID-to-VLAN mapping, client isolation and rogue AP detection.
