The TP-Link EAP223 is an Omada AC1350 Wi-Fi 5 ceiling mount access point with 802.11ac Wave 2 MU-MIMO, delivering up to 867 Mbps on 5 GHz and 450 Mbps on 2.4 GHz. It has one gigabit port powered by 802.3af PoE or 24 V passive PoE (no PoE adapter in the box), up to 16 SSIDs, 802.11k/v/r roaming, Omada Mesh and Omada SDN cloud management.

EAP223 overview

The EAP223 is TP-Link's Omada AC1350 Wireless MU-MIMO Gigabit Ceiling Mount Access Point. TP-Link's Australian page shows hardware version V2 (V1 is also listed). It is a dual-band Wi-Fi 5 access point built to IEEE 802.11ac/n/g/b/a, with simultaneous signal rates of up to 867 Mbps on 5 GHz and 450 Mbps on 2.4 GHz, which TP-Link totals as 1317 Mbps (AC1350 class). TP-Link says its 802.11ac Wave 2 MU-MIMO technology delivers dual-band Wi-Fi to multiple devices at the same time. Maximum signal rates are physical rates; real throughput, coverage and client numbers vary with client devices, interference and building materials.

Three internal omni antennas, 4 dBi on 2.4 GHz and 5 dBi on 5 GHz, sit in a 205.5 x 181.5 x 37.1 mm (8.1 x 7.1 x 1.5 in) ceiling housing, and ceiling and wall mounting kits are included. TP-Link lists coverage of 115 square metres (1,250 sq ft) and more than 220 concurrent clients; both figures come from TP-Link's own testing and actual results depend on the environment. Transmit power is listed as up to 20 dBm on 2.4 GHz and 23 dBm on 5 GHz EIRP under CE, and 24 dBm and 22 dBm under FCC. Advanced RF features include MU-MIMO, beamforming, band steering, load balance and airtime fairness, plus WMM QoS, automatic channel assignment and transmit power control.

Power and wiring are flexible. The single gigabit Ethernet port accepts IEEE 802.3af PoE from a PoE switch or a 24 V passive PoE supply (pins 4 and 5 positive, 7 and 8 negative), and maximum power consumption is 12.6 W. TP-Link states that a PoE adapter is not included with the EAP223, so plan on a PoE switch or injector; this is the main practical difference from the EAP225, which TP-Link ships with a passive PoE adapter and power cord. The access point also has a reset button and a physical security lock slot.

Wireless functions include up to 16 SSIDs (eight per band), wireless schedules and reboot schedules, rate limiting, enable and disable of each radio, and wireless statistics by SSID, AP or client. TP-Link lists seamless roaming with 802.11k/v/r, so voice calls and video streams are not interrupted as users move between access points, and Omada Mesh for wireless links between APs; TP-Link notes both depend on the controller setup. Security covers captive portal authentication (with SMS login highlighted for guest networks), access control, wireless MAC address filtering, wireless isolation between clients, SSID-to-VLAN mapping, rogue AP detection and 802.1X.

The EAP223 integrates into Omada SDN. Centralised management is through the Omada Hardware Controller OC300 or OC200, the Omada Software Controller or the Omada Cloud-Based Controller, with cloud access and the Omada app; Zero-Touch Provisioning requires the Omada Cloud-Based Controller. Local management uses HTTP/HTTPS, SSH, SNMP v1/v2c, local and remote syslog, email alerts, L3 management, multi-site management, a management VLAN, management MAC access control and LED on/off control. It is rated for 0 to 40 degrees C operation and certified CE and FCC. In the box are the EAP223, mounting kits and an installation guide.
