The TP-Link DR3650v is an Omada AX3000 Wi-Fi 6 Gigabit desktop DSL gateway. It combines a VDSL2/ADSL2+/ADSL modem with Super VDSL (profile 35b) up to 350 Mbps, dual-band Wi-Fi 6 of 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz plus 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz, five Gigabit RJ45 ports (one WAN/LAN), two FXS phone ports, two USB 3.0 ports for 4G/3G dongles or storage, IPsec, WireGuard, OpenVPN and SSL VPN, DPI security and Omada SDN management.

DR3650v overview

The DR3650v is TP-Link's Omada AX3000 Wi-Fi 6 Gigabit desktop DSL gateway. TP-Link Australia lists hardware version V1.20, with V1 as the earlier version. It puts a DSL modem, a business VPN router, a dual-band Wi-Fi 6 access point and a two-line voice gateway in one desktop box. The integrated DSL port supports VDSL2, ADSL2+, ADSL2 and ADSL connections, and TP-Link highlights Super VDSL (VDSL2 profile 35b) for up to 350 Mbps DSL access. Supported VDSL2 profiles are 8a, 8b, 8c, 8d, 12a, 12b, 17a and 35b, with VDSL2 to ITU G.993.2 and ADSL2+ to ITU-T G.992.5. TP-Link notes maximum wired signal rates are physical rates and actual throughput will vary.

Beyond DSL, TP-Link says the DR3650v is compatible with Ethernet access and 4G/3G USB modems. Its Gigabit WAN/LAN port accepts connections from cable or fibre modems, and the two USB 3.0 ports support a USB LTE dongle for a main or backup internet connection, or USB storage. In all there are three RJ11 ports (two FXS and one DSL), five Gigabit RJ45 ports (one WAN/LAN and four LAN) and two USB 3.0 ports. Multi-WAN features include intelligent load balancing, application optimised routing, link backup with timing and failover, and online detection. Routing covers static and policy routing, with RIP and OSPF in Standalone Mode.

The built-in radio is dual-band AX3000 Wi-Fi 6: up to 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz (HE160) and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz, through two 3 dBi and three 4.5 dBi dual-band detachable antennas. Wireless features include seamless roaming, OFDMA, beamforming, MU-MIMO, WPA/WPA2/WPA3 Personal and Enterprise, load balance, airtime fairness, band steering, guest network, wireless schedules and transmit power control, and TP-Link's datasheet lists up to 16 SSIDs (8 per radio). Omada Mesh works with EAPs that support mesh. TP-Link notes that Wi-Fi 6 features such as OFDMA, HE160 and 1024-QAM require compatible clients, and the 160 MHz bandwidth is only available on 5 GHz and may be unavailable in some regions.

For VPN, the DR3650v supports 100 IPsec tunnels (LAN-to-LAN and client-to-LAN, IKEv1/v2, AES256, SHA2-512), 50 SSL VPN tunnels, PPTP and L2TP servers with 50 tunnels each, 55 OpenVPN tunnels, WireGuard, GRE in Standalone Mode and SD-WAN in Controller Mode. TP-Link lists IPsec throughput up to 569.9 Mbps (ESP-SHA1-AES256), WireGuard 311.6 Mbps, OpenVPN 129.3 Mbps and SSL VPN 126.7 Mbps. NAT throughput is around 936 to 946 Mbps for static IP, DHCP and PPPoE, with 150,000 concurrent sessions and 3,800 new sessions per second. Security covers DPI with 2,421 application types (881 Mbps TCP DPI throughput), stateful and IPv4/IPv6 ACLs, country-based and FQDN ACLs, DNS proxy with DNSSEC, DoH and DoT, URL category filtering, flood and scan defence and ARP detection. TP-Link notes rated specifications are based on test results with a specific software version and may vary.

The two FXS ports connect analogue phones. TP-Link's datasheet lists SIP with RTP/RTCP, 12 SIP registrars, telephone book, DND and call blocking, call waiting, forwarding, hold and return, call log and voicemail, with G.711, G.726, G.729 A/B and G.722 codecs. Management is through Omada Central (cloud-based), an Omada hardware controller or software controller, with cloud access, the Omada app and Zero-Touch Provisioning (cloud-based controller only), or standalone via the web interface, CLI, SNMP and TR-069. Hotspot authentication supports local users, with vouchers, SMS and RADIUS in Controller Mode.

Physically it is a 226 x 131 x 35 mm desktop unit (antennas excluded) weighing 1.07 kg, powered by a 12 VDC / 3.3 A adapter, with maximum consumption of 35.21 W including the adapter at full load with 10 W USB load. It can sit on a desk, mount on a wall, or go in a rack with the Kit-D226, which is sold separately. Surge protection is 6 kV on the DSL port and 4 kV on other ports, and operating temperature is 0 to 40 degrees C. For a 1U rackmount DSL gateway with a built-in 4G+ Cat6 modem instead of Wi-Fi 6, TP-Link offers the DR3220v-4G. In the box are the DR3650v, a power adapter, an Ethernet cable, a phone cable, rubber feet and a quick installation guide.
