The TP-Link Deco M4 (3-pack) is a three-unit AC1200 whole home mesh Wi-Fi system. TP-Link says the three-pack delivers Wi-Fi to an area of up to 500 square metres and sizes it for 3-5 bedroom houses. Each Deco M4 offers 867 Mbps on 5 GHz and 300 Mbps on 2.4 GHz, two gigabit WAN/LAN auto-sensing ports, beamforming and MU-MIMO, all managed in the Deco app.

Deco M4 (3-pack) overview

The Deco M4 (3-pack) is the three-unit version of TP-Link's AC1200 whole home mesh Wi-Fi system, and it is the pack TP-Link quotes coverage for. According to TP-Link, a Deco M4 three-pack delivers Wi-Fi to an area of up to 500 square metres, and the specification table lists the 3-pack for 3-5 bedroom houses. Three units let you cover the modem end of the house, the middle and the far rooms or upper floor, and TP-Link illustrates layouts such as ranch-style, multi-storey and L-shaped homes. The three Decos form one unified network with a single network name, devices switch automatically to the fastest Deco as you move, and if you need more coverage you can add more Decos at any time.

Each of the three Decos is a full AC1200 dual-band unit, with 867 Mbps on 5 GHz (IEEE 802.11ac/n/a) and 300 Mbps on 2.4 GHz (802.11n/b/g), for speeds TP-Link quotes as up to 1167 Mbps. Two internal antennas per unit create a signal-boosting array, beamforming concentrates signal towards clients to extend range, and MU-MIMO serves multiple MU-MIMO clients simultaneously while dual-band operation spreads devices across the bands. TP-Link rates capacity as medium and says the system provides lag-free connections for up to 100 devices, based on multi-application testing it ran in December 2018 that combined streaming, browsing, downloads, IP cameras and smart home devices. Coverage and speed figures are TP-Link's test results under normal conditions and will vary with building materials, obstacles and interference.

Three units give six gigabit Ethernet ports, two on each Deco, all with WAN/LAN auto-sensing. That lets you wire a TV or console near any Deco, or cable the units together for an optional gigabit Ethernet backhaul; TP-Link says wireless connections and Ethernet backhaul work together to link the Decos for faster speeds and seamless coverage, so you can mix cabled and wireless links across the three nodes. The main unit takes your internet connection using Dynamic IP, Static IP, PPPoE, PPTP or L2TP, and TP-Link says Deco works with major internet service providers and modems. Router Mode is the default, and Access Point Mode adds Wi-Fi to an existing wired network. IPTV support covers IGMP proxy, IGMP snooping, bridge and tag VLAN.

Security across the three-unit network is provided by an SPI firewall and access control, with WPA-Personal and WPA2-Personal encryption and a guest network on each of the 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz bands. For a larger household, the Deco app's parental controls let you set up a profile per family member with custom time limits and online allowances, block sites with age-appropriate filter levels and URL filtering, review insights into sites visited and time spent, and suspend internet access for the whole home with one tap. QoS by device prioritises the devices you choose, and TP-Link DDNS, port forwarding, UPnP, a DHCP server with address reservation and IPv4 and IPv6 are also listed.

Setup for all three Decos runs through the Deco app on Android 5.0 or later or iOS 9.0 or later: connect the first Deco to your modem and power both on, download and launch the app, then follow the in-app instructions to configure the system. Afterwards the app manages the network at home or away, firmware arrives as OTA upgrades through your TP-Link ID, and the system can be paired with Amazon Alexa for voice commands. TP-Link states the Deco M4 is compatible with every other Deco model. Each unit measures 90.7 x 90.7 x 190 mm and operates from 0 to 40 degrees C, and APC magazine in Australia gave the Deco M4 four out of five stars in 2020. In the 3-pack box: three Deco M4R units, one RJ45 Ethernet cable, three power adapters and one quick installation guide. TP-Link's AU page lists versions V2, V2.40, V3 and V4, and the specifications here are from that page.
