The TP-Link Deco E4 (3-pack) is a three-unit AC1200 whole home mesh Wi-Fi system that TP-Link sizes for 3-4 bedroom houses. The three Deco E4 units share one network name and each offer 867 Mbps on 5 GHz and 300 Mbps on 2.4 GHz, with MU-MIMO, beamforming, two 10/100 Mbps Ethernet ports, guest Wi-Fi and Deco app parental controls.

Deco E4 (3-pack) overview

With three Deco E4 units, this 3-pack spreads Wi-Fi across more rooms and floors than a single router can reach. TP-Link's specification table sizes the Deco E4 3-pack for 3-4 bedroom houses. Place one unit next to your modem and the other two where the signal used to drop out, such as an upstairs bedroom or the far end of a long single-level home, and all three join into one network with a single Wi-Fi name. TP-Link Mesh means your phone or tablet connects to the fastest Deco automatically as you move, and the units can link over 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz wireless or over an optional Ethernet backhaul. Need still more coverage? TP-Link says you can simply add another Deco.

The radios in all three units are the same AC1200 dual-band design. On 5 GHz each Deco E4 supports IEEE 802.11ac/n/a at up to 867 Mbps, and on 2.4 GHz 802.11n/b/g at up to 300 Mbps. TP-Link describes 802.11ac as giving network speeds three times faster than previous-generation routers. Two internal antennas per Deco form a signal-boosting array, beamforming steers signal towards clients to expand range, and MU-MIMO serves several MU-MIMO clients simultaneously, with dual-band operation distributing devices across the two bands. Capacity is rated medium, with lag-free connections for up to 100 devices. TP-Link notes that range, coverage and connected device numbers are test results under normal usage and will vary with building materials, interference, network load and the clients themselves.

Across the three units you have six Ethernet ports, two per Deco, each 10/100 Mbps with WAN/LAN auto-sensing. That suits a smart TV, game console or printer near each Deco, or a wired backhaul between units where you have cable runs, but it is not gigabit wired networking. The main Deco connects to your modem using Dynamic IP, Static IP, PPPoE, PPTP or L2TP. In Router Mode, the default, the system creates its own private wireless network; in Access Point Mode it adds Wi-Fi to an existing wired network. IPTV is supported through IGMP proxy, IGMP snooping, bridge and tag VLAN, alongside port forwarding, UPnP, TP-Link DDNS, a DHCP server with address reservation and a client list, and IPv4 and IPv6.

For families, the Deco app's parental controls cover all three units at once. You can create a profile for each person, set age-appropriate filter levels, apply URL filtering and time controls, check which sites children visit and how long they spend there, and suspend internet access for everyone with a single tap at dinner time. QoS by device prioritises chosen devices. Security is provided by an SPI firewall and access control, Wi-Fi is protected with WPA-Personal or WPA2-Personal, and a guest network is available on each of the 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz bands so visitors stay off your main network.

Getting the three Decos running is app-led: unpack them, install the Deco app on Android 5.0 or later or iOS 9.0 or later, and follow the directions on screen. Afterwards the app shows connected devices and network status at home or away, OTA firmware upgrades arrive through TP-Link's cloud service with your TP-Link ID, and the system can be paired with Amazon Alexa for voice control. The Deco E4 works with every other Deco model, so a newer Deco can be added later. Each unit is 90.7 x 90.7 x 190 mm and operates from 0 to 40 degrees C in 10 to 90 percent non-condensing humidity. The 3-pack box contains three Deco E4R units, one RJ45 Ethernet cable, three power adapters and one quick installation guide. TP-Link's AU page lists hardware versions V1 to V4; specifications above are taken from that page.
