The TP-Link Deco E4 (2-pack) is an AC1200 dual-band whole home mesh Wi-Fi system made of two Deco E4 units. TP-Link says the 2-pack covers up to 260 square metres, with 867 Mbps on 5 GHz and 300 Mbps on 2.4 GHz, connections for up to 100 devices, two 10/100 Mbps Ethernet ports per unit and simple setup and parental controls in the Deco app.

Deco E4 (2-pack) overview

The Deco E4 (2-pack) puts two Deco E4 units in one box to replace a single router with a whole home mesh network. TP-Link says the Deco E4 2-pack delivers Wi-Fi to an area of up to 260 square metres, and if that is not enough you can add more Decos at any time to increase coverage. The two units work together as one unified network with a single network name, and devices automatically switch to the fastest Deco as you move between rooms. TP-Link shows the system in ranch-style, multi-storey and L-shaped homes, with 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz wireless links between the units and an optional Ethernet backhaul where you can run a cable between them.

Each Deco E4 is an AC1200 dual-band Wi-Fi 5 unit: 867 Mbps on 5 GHz using 802.11ac and 300 Mbps on 2.4 GHz using 802.11n, for combined speeds TP-Link quotes as up to 1167 Mbps. The 5 GHz radio supports IEEE 802.11ac/n/a and the 2.4 GHz radio 802.11n/b/g. Two internal antennas per unit form a signal-boosting array, beamforming concentrates the signal towards clients, and MU-MIMO lets a unit talk to several MU-MIMO clients at once. TP-Link rates capacity as medium and says the system provides lag-free connections for up to 100 devices; its December 2018 multi-application test example included IP camera streaming, 720p, 1080p and 4K streaming, web browsing and smart home devices running together. As with all Wi-Fi figures, these are maximum signal rates and test results under normal conditions, not guarantees.

Wired connections are modest, so it helps to know them before you buy. Each Deco E4 has two 10/100 Mbps Ethernet ports with WAN/LAN auto-sensing and a reset button. One port on the main unit connects to your modem, and the remaining ports can serve wired devices or an Ethernet backhaul between the two Decos. Supported WAN types are Dynamic IP, Static IP, PPPoE, PPTP and L2TP, and TP-Link says Deco works with major internet service providers and modems. The Deco E4 runs in Router Mode by default to create a private wireless network, or in Access Point Mode to add Wi-Fi to an existing wired network, and IPTV support covers IGMP proxy, IGMP snooping, bridge and tag VLAN.

Security features are an SPI firewall and access control, with WPA-Personal and WPA2-Personal encryption. Guest networks are available on both 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz. Parental controls in the Deco app let you create a profile for each family member, apply age-based filter levels and URL filtering, set time limits and online allowances, see which sites are visited and suspend internet access for the whole home with one tap. QoS by device lets you prioritise the devices that matter most. Cloud services include OTA firmware upgrades, TP-Link ID and TP-Link DDNS, and port forwarding, UPnP, a DHCP server with address reservation and both IPv4 and IPv6 are supported.

Setup is app-based: unpack the system, download the Deco app on an Android 5.0 or later or iOS 9.0 or later device and follow the on-screen directions. The same app lets you manage the network at home or away, see connected devices and set up the guest network, and the Deco E4 can be paired with Amazon Alexa for voice commands. TP-Link states that the Deco E4 is compatible with every other Deco model to form a mesh network. Each unit measures 90.7 x 90.7 x 190 mm and operates from 0 to 40 degrees C. In the 2-pack box you get two Deco E4R units, one RJ45 Ethernet cable, two power adapters and one quick installation guide. TP-Link's AU page covers hardware versions V1 to V4 of the Deco E4; the specifications here are those published on that page.
