The TP-Link Deco BE68 (1-pack) is a BE14000 tri-band whole home mesh Wi-Fi 7 system with one Deco BE68 unit. Each unit lists up to 8647 Mbps on 6 GHz, 4324 Mbps on 5 GHz and 688 Mbps on 2.4 GHz with MLO, 320 MHz channels and 4K-QAM, and has a 10 Gbps, a 2.5 Gbps and a gigabit WAN/LAN auto-sensing port plus USB 3.0. It adds HomeShield security, VPN server and client including WireGuard, and works with every other Deco model.

Deco BE68 (1-pack) overview

The Deco BE68 is TP-Link's BE14000 tri-band whole home mesh Wi-Fi 7 system, and this 1-pack contains one Deco BE68 unit. TP-Link describes it as an 8-stream tri-band system with a combined speed of up to 14 Gbps across its bands: 8647 Mbps on 6 GHz, 4324 Mbps on 5 GHz and 688 Mbps on 2.4 GHz, all 802.11be. These are maximum wireless signal rates, the physical rates derived from the IEEE 802.11 standard; TP-Link notes that actual throughput, coverage and connected devices vary with internet service provider factors, network conditions, client limitations and the environment, including building materials, obstacles and traffic. Wi-Fi 7 features listed are Multi-Link Operation (MLO), 320 MHz channels, 4K-QAM and Multi-RUs, with 3x3 MU-MIMO, OFDMA and eight streams. TP-Link explains that MLO sends and receives data across different bands and channels at the same time to increase throughput, reduce latency and improve reliability, and that 320 MHz channels double the bandwidth compared with 160 MHz for Wi-Fi 6 mesh. The 320 MHz bandwidth is only available on the 6 GHz band, and these features need clients that also support them. Eight internal high-gain antennas form a signal-boosting array to cover more directions.

Wired connectivity is where the BE68 stands out. Each Deco BE68 unit has one 10 Gbps port, one 2.5 Gbps port and one gigabit port, all with WAN/LAN auto-sensing, so any of them can serve as the WAN port, though only one port works as the WAN at a time. TP-Link says the BE68 supports gigabit+ and multi-gig internet service plans up to 10 Gbps, noting that 10 Gbps and 2.5 Gbps internet speeds require compatible service plans and equipment. A USB 3.0 port supports an FTP server, media server and Samba server. Through TP-Link's own technology the Deco BE68 can connect a wireless and a wired backhaul with each unit simultaneously, and with Wi-Fi 7 MLO the combined backhaul aggregation flow rate is increased, which TP-Link says improves overall throughput, reduces latency and delivers more stable connections. As a 1-pack it can run as a router or as an access point on its own, or be added to an existing Deco network, since TP-Link says the Deco BE68 is compatible with every other Deco model to form a mesh network.

Deco mesh forms a unified network with a single network name. Built-in AI-Roaming uses self-learning algorithms so you can walk through your home and keep streaming; TP-Link notes clients need to support 802.11k/v/r and may need additional setup. TP-Link Mesh Technology adds true seamless roaming, adaptive path selection, band steering, AP steering and self-healing, where the system reroutes data through the other Decos if one has an issue. HomeShield is built in, covering an SPI firewall, access control, real-time IoT protection, a malicious site blocker, an intrusion prevention system, DDoS attack prevention and a home network scanner. HomeShield includes the free Basic Plan, fees apply for the Pro Plan, and some features will arrive with later software updates. You can also set up a separate Wi-Fi network for IoT devices with HomeShield and WPA3 encryption, where the clients also support WPA3, and guest networks are available on 6 GHz, 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz. OpenVPN, PPTP, L2TP/IPSec and WireGuard are supported as both VPN server and VPN client.

Setup takes three steps in the Deco app: connect the Deco to your modem and power on both, download and launch the app, then follow the in-app instructions. The app is also where you check connected devices, set up guest access and manage the network remotely. HomeShield parental controls include custom profiles, a professional content filter library, YouTube restriction, SafeSearch, family time, bedtime, off time, time rewards and weekly and monthly reports. The Deco BE68 works with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant, supports Tapo/Kasa onboarding, IPv4 and IPv6, and Dynamic IP, Static IP, PPPoE, PPTP and L2TP WAN types. TP-Link describes it as backward compatible with all Wi-Fi generations and working with any internet service provider and modem, though some users may need an extra modem compatible with their provider. Each unit measures 107.5 x 107.5 x 176 mm and operates from 0 to 40 °C. The 1-pack box contains one Deco BE68 unit, one RJ45 Ethernet cable, one power adapter and a quick installation guide.
