The TP-Link CPE605 is a 5 GHz 150 Mbps outdoor CPE built around a 23 dBi directional Cassegrain antenna with a dedicated metal reflector and a narrow 7° azimuth by 10° elevation beam. Snap-lock parts speed up assembly, the IP65 enclosure carries 15 kV ESD and 6 kV lightning protection, and it supports Pharos MAXtream TDMA, Pharos Control and 24 V passive PoE.

CPE605 overview

The CPE605 is TP-Link's 5 GHz 150 Mbps 23 dBi outdoor CPE. TP-Link sums it up as a 23 dBi directional antenna with professional structural stability for long-distance outdoor Wi-Fi transmission, and calls the combination of professional performance and user-friendly design an ideal choice and cost-effective solution for outdoor wireless networking. TP-Link's comparison table places it beside the 300 Mbps CPE610 and the 867 Mbps CPE710, both also 23 dBi.

The heart of the CPE605 is a 23 dBi high-gain directional Cassegrain antenna paired with a dedicated metal reflector. TP-Link says this design provides excellent beam directivity, improved latency and noise immunity. The beamwidth is 7 degrees in azimuth and 10 degrees in elevation. The radio is IEEE 802.11a/n, or a proprietary TDMA protocol with Pharos MAXtream enabled, across 5.15 to 5.85 GHz with a maximum transmission power of 23 dBm adjustable in 1 dBm steps.

Throughput is quoted as signal rates: up to 150 Mbps on 40 MHz, 72.2 Mbps on 20 MHz, 36.1 Mbps on 10 MHz and 18.05 Mbps on 5 MHz. TP-Link says MAXtream TDMA improves throughput, capacity and latency. Wireless configuration includes selectable 5/10/20/40 MHz channels, auto channel selection, transmit power control, DFS, WDS, multi-SSID with VLAN tagging in AP mode, distance/ACK timeout, a MAC filter and WPA/WPA2, WPA-PSK/WPA2-PSK (AES/TKIP) and 64/128/152-bit WEP security. TP-Link does not quote a range figure for the CPE605 on its Australian page.

Mechanically, the antenna is assembled from an antenna feed, a centre reflector panel, two side reflector panels, a feed receiver and a pole mount. TP-Link says the snap-lock parts make assembly simple and convenient, the pole mount kit and three-axis alignment give installation flexibility, and the sturdy design keeps the CPE605 stable even in strong winds. TP-Link also highlights small, lightweight retail packaging. Assembled, the unit measures 350 x 255 x 207 mm.

The enclosure is outdoor PC stabilised plastic with an IP65 water- and dust-proof design, backed by 15 kV ESD and 6 kV lightning protection and an operating range of -40 to 70 °C. Pharos Control, which TP-Link describes as a free centralised management system, handles device discovery, status monitoring, firmware upgrades and maintenance from one PC; the PharOS web interface is the alternative for detailed configuration. Network functions include IPv6, Static, Dynamic, PPPoE, L2TP and PPTP WAN types, DHCP, ALG, UPnP, virtual server and port triggering, an SPI firewall with Ping forbidden and DoS protection, access control, static routing, bandwidth control and IP and MAC binding.

The CPE605 runs on a Qualcomm 560 MHz MIPS 74Kc CPU with 64 MB DDR2 RAM and 8 MB flash. It has one 10/100 Mbps shielded Ethernet port (LAN/PoE) and a reset button, and is powered by passive PoE via that port at 16-27 VDC. The supplied adapter outputs 24 VDC, supports Power over Ethernet runs of up to 60 m and has a remote reset button. TP-Link's package list names a 24 V 0.5 A adapter while the adapter specification lists 0.6 A maximum output. The box holds the outdoor CPE, the passive PoE adapter, pole mounting straps, an AC power cord and an installation guide.
