The TP-Link Archer TBE400U is a BE6500 tri-band Wi-Fi 7 mini wireless USB adapter for Windows 10 and 11 (64-bit) computers. TP-Link lists dynamic signal rates of up to 2882 Mbps on 6 GHz, 2882 Mbps on 5 GHz and 688 Mbps on 2.4 GHz, with Multi-Link Operation, a dual Type-C and Type-A connector, a SuperSpeed USB 3.0 interface, WPA3 security and a built-in driver.

Archer TBE400U overview

The Archer TBE400U is TP-Link's BE6500 tri-band Wi-Fi 7 mini wireless USB adapter, built to bring IEEE 802.11be to a laptop or desktop running Windows 10 or Windows 11 (64-bit). It supports IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n/ac/ax/be across three bands. TP-Link lists every signal rate as dynamic: on 6 GHz up to 2882 Mbps with 11be and 2402 Mbps with 11ax; on 5 GHz up to 2882 Mbps with 11be, 2402 Mbps with 11ax, 1732 Mbps with 11ac, 400 Mbps with 11n and 54 Mbps with 11a; and on 2.4 GHz up to 688 Mbps with 11be, 574 Mbps with 11ax, 400 Mbps with 11n, 54 Mbps with 11g and 11 Mbps with 11b. Those three 11be rates together give the BE6500 class. TP-Link notes that maximum signal rates are physical rates from the IEEE 802.11 standard, and that real throughput and coverage depend on the router, building materials, interference and distance.

Wi-Fi 7 brings Multi-Link Operation (MLO), which TP-Link says dynamically optimises frequency band usage so the adapter always operates on the best available channel, for reduced latency and a lag-free experience in gaming and streaming. The product page also highlights 4K-QAM for higher data efficiency and Multi-RUs for serving more users at faster speeds. TP-Link's footnote is worth reading before you buy: Wi-Fi 7, MLO, 160 MHz bandwidth, 4K-QAM, Multi-RUs, OFDMA and MU-MIMO all need the router or access point and the PC operating system to support them as well, and MLO support is still being developed on some Wi-Fi 7 models and will arrive in later driver updates.

The hardware is what sets the TBE400U apart. It has a dual-port design, so the same adapter plugs straight into a USB Type-C port or a USB Type-A port without a separate dongle, and TP-Link describes it as designed for USB-C stability with the option to swap to USB-A at any time. The interface is SuperSpeed USB 3.0, which TP-Link says offers ten times the speed of USB 2.0 along with shorter response times and better power management; the computer must also support USB 3.0 to get that benefit. The antennas are internal and the body measures 72 x 24 x 10.8 mm, small enough to carry in a laptop bag for use at airports, schools, cafes and parks, the settings TP-Link pictures for it.

Setup is plug and play. TP-Link says the TBE400U is ready to use out of the box with its built-in driver and needs no CD on Windows 10 or 11 (64-bit), though the adapter's driver may need updating after an operating system update, and current drivers are published in TP-Link's download centre. Wireless modes are Client Mode and Hotspot Mode, and security covers WPA/WPA2/WPA3 and WPA-PSK/WPA2-PSK, with WPA3 adding protection against brute-force attacks where the router also supports it. It carries FCC and CE certification and is rated for operation from 0 °C to 40 °C at 10% to 90% non-condensing humidity. In the box are the Archer TBE400U adapter and a quick installation guide.
