The TP-Link Archer T4U is an AC1300 wireless dual-band USB adapter with two high-gain antennas in a flip-up housing. It delivers up to 867 Mbps on 5 GHz and 400 Mbps on 2.4 GHz over USB 3.0, has a WPS button, measures 92.47 x 31.55 x 13.9 mm and is listed for Windows 11/10/8.1/8/7 and Mac OS 10.15 and earlier.

Archer T4U overview

The Archer T4U is TP-Link's AC1300 high gain wireless dual-band USB adapter, introduced by TP-Link with the line higher gain, superior coverage, faster streaming. It supports IEEE 802.11ac, 802.11a, 802.11n, 802.11g and 802.11b, and TP-Link says Wireless AC delivers connections up to three times faster than the previous Wireless N standard. Dynamic signal rates are listed at up to 867 Mbps (11ac), 300 Mbps (11n) and 54 Mbps (11a) on 5 GHz, and up to 400 Mbps (11n), 54 Mbps (11g) and 11 Mbps (11b) on 2.4 GHz. TP-Link recommends the 5 GHz band for HD video streaming and lag-free online gaming, and 2.4 GHz for normal use such as web surfing with legacy devices, and suggests pairing it with an Archer series 11ac router for better performance.

Two high-gain antennas sit in the T4U's flip-up housing, and TP-Link says they greatly extend Wi-Fi range and coverage compared with a typical wireless adapter, for a stable connection across your home. Transmission power is listed at less than 20 dBm EIRP. The body measures 92.47 x 31.55 x 13.9 mm, and a WPS button allows push-button connection to a WPS-capable router. Published reception sensitivity on 5 GHz runs from -91 dBm at 11a 6 Mbps to -62 dBm at 11ac HT80, and on 2.4 GHz from -86 dBm at 11b 11 Mbps to -70 dBm at 11n HT40.

The interface is USB 3.0. TP-Link describes USB 3.0 transfers of up to 4.8 Gbps, up to ten times faster than USB 2.0, and says it lets the Archer T4U break through the USB 2.0 limitation for an 802.11ac high-speed experience, while remaining backwards compatible with USB 2.0 ports. Wireless modes are ad-hoc and infrastructure, and modulation covers DBPSK, DQPSK, CCK, OFDM, 16-QAM, 64-QAM and 256-QAM.

Next to the Archer T5U Plus, which has the same AC1300 rates, the T4U is the model with a WPS button and listed Mac OS support; the T5U Plus instead adds beamforming, MU-MIMO, foldable dual antennas, a status LED and plug-and-play setup. For security, the T4U specification table lists 64/128-bit WEP and WPA-PSK/WPA2-PSK, while its overview cites WPA/WPA2/WPA3 encryption standards. Software installs from the intuitive utility on the provided CD. The specification table lists Windows 11, 10, 8.1, 8 and 7 and Mac OS 10.15 and earlier. It is rated for operation from 0 to 40 degrees C at 10 to 90% non-condensing humidity, and for storage from -40 to 70 degrees C at 5 to 90% non-condensing humidity, with CE and FCC certification. In the box are the Archer T4U adapter, a quick installation guide and a resource CD.
