The TP-Link Archer T3U is an AC1300 mini wireless MU-MIMO USB adapter with up to 867 Mbps on 5 GHz and 400 Mbps on 2.4 GHz. It uses USB 3.0, measures 40.5 x 19.72 x 10.29 mm with an internal omni-directional antenna, supports MU-MIMO with compatible routers and is listed for Windows 11/10/8.1/8/7/XP and Mac OS 10.15 and earlier.

Archer T3U overview

The Archer T3U is TP-Link's AC1300 mini wireless MU-MIMO USB adapter. It supports IEEE 802.11ac, 802.11a, 802.11n, 802.11g and 802.11b, and TP-Link says Wireless AC makes connections up to three times faster than the previous Wireless N standard. Listed dynamic signal rates are up to 867 Mbps with 11ac, 300 Mbps with 11n and 54 Mbps with 11a on 5 GHz, and up to 400 Mbps with 11n, 54 Mbps with 11g and 11 Mbps with 11b on 2.4 GHz, enough in TP-Link's words for everything from HD video streaming to lag-free online gaming and web surfing.

Unlike the USB 2.0 nano adapters in TP-Link's range, the Archer T3U uses USB 3.0. TP-Link describes USB 3.0 as transferring data up to ten times faster than USB 2.0, with transfers of up to 4.8 Gbps, and notes that it is backwards compatible with USB 2.0 ports; paired with 802.11ac Wi-Fi it positions the T3U for HD streaming, online gaming and large file downloads. MU-MIMO lets the adapter provide two simultaneous data streams, improving the throughput and efficiency of the entire network when working with a compatible MU-MIMO router.

The housing is a mini design at 40.5 x 19.72 x 10.29 mm, which TP-Link says is tinier than a usual USB adapter and easy to carry, with an omni-directional antenna inside. This is the main difference from the Archer T3U Plus: both share the AC1300 rates, MU-MIMO and USB 3.0, but the Plus is a 173.4 mm tall high-gain adapter with an adjustable external antenna for range, whereas the T3U is the compact choice for laptops and travel. Transmission power is listed at less than 23 dBm EIRP, and published reception sensitivity on 5 GHz runs from -91 dBm at 11a 6 Mbps to -62 dBm at 11ac HT80.

Security support is 64/128-bit WEP, WPA/WPA2 and WPA-PSK/WPA2-PSK, modulation covers DBPSK, DQPSK, CCK, OFDM, 16-QAM, 64-QAM and 256-QAM, and wireless modes are ad-hoc and infrastructure. Setup is through a friendly user interface on the resource CD. TP-Link's specification table lists Windows 11, 10, 8.1, 8, 7 and XP and Mac OS 10.15 and earlier. It is rated for operation from 0 to 40 degrees C at 10 to 90% non-condensing humidity, and for storage from -40 to 70 degrees C at 5 to 90% non-condensing humidity. Certifications are CE and FCC. In the box are the Archer T3U adapter, a quick installation guide and a resource CD.
