The TP-Link Archer MX700 is a 4G+ Cat6 LTE router with AX1500 dual-band Wi-Fi 6. A nano SIM card gives 4G+ speeds TP-Link rates at 300 Mbps download and 50 Mbps upload, shared at 1201 Mbps on 5 GHz and 300 Mbps on 2.4 GHz with up to 128 concurrent connections. It has four gigabit ports including a LAN/WAN port for 4G backup, internal antennas plus two external antenna ports, and EasyMesh support.

Archer MX700 overview

The Archer MX700 is TP-Link's 4G+ AX1500 dual band Wi-Fi LTE router, an upright white desktop unit that turns a nano SIM card into home or small-business broadband. TP-Link pitches it at people who want to avoid fixed-line installation waits and contracts and need internet that moves with them, naming home offices, pop-up shops, travel vans and holiday homes. Its 4G+ Cat6 modem uses carrier aggregation and is rated at 300 Mbps download and 50 Mbps upload. Supported bands are FDD B1, B3, B5, B7, B8, B20 and B28 (2100, 1800, 850, 2600, 900, 800 and 700 MHz) and TDD B38, B40 and B41 (2600, 2300 and 2500 MHz), with 3G on B1, B5 and B8.

Inside are two internal 4G/3G antennas and two internal Wi-Fi antennas, and the back panel adds two external antenna ports so you can connect external LTE antennas where signal is weak. Wi-Fi is dual band, with IEEE 802.11a/n/ac/ax (Wi-Fi 6) at 5 GHz rated at 1201 Mbps and IEEE 802.11b/g/n at 2.4 GHz rated at 300 Mbps, for an AX1500 total. TP-Link suggests the 5 GHz band for lag-free 4K streaming and the 2.4 GHz band for web browsing. With MU-MIMO and beamforming the MX700 supports 128 concurrent connections, which TP-Link says makes it suitable for high-density small businesses as well as homes. Wireless security options are 64/128-bit WEP, WPA/WPA2 Personal, WPA/WPA2 Enterprise and WPA/WPA3 Personal, with a guest network on each band and a wireless schedule.

Every Ethernet port is gigabit: one LAN/WAN port and three LAN ports. With a cable, fibre or DSL modem on the LAN/WAN port, the MX700 runs as a conventional router and keeps 4G+ ready as a backup connection; otherwise that port gives gigabit speed to another wired device. The operating modes are 3G/4G Router and Wireless Router, and WAN types include Dynamic IP, Static IP, PPPoE and PPTP and L2TP with dual access. If parts of the home are out of range, add another EasyMesh-compatible router or range extender to form a whole-home mesh network.

The software side covers bandwidth control, a DHCP server with client list and address reservation, virtual server, port triggering, UPnP and DMZ, and dynamic DNS through TP-Link, DynDNS and NO-IP. Security is an IPv4 SPI firewall with ALG, IP and MAC address binding and access control, and IPv4 and IPv6 are both supported. Management runs through TP-Link Cloud, local and remote management, the web interface and the Tether app for Android and iOS, which also handles parental controls, access control and automatic firmware updates. Administration tools include firmware upgrade, factory reset, a system log and diagnostic tools.

The MX700 measures 199.7 x 148.6 x 67.5 mm, operates at 0 to 40 degrees C with 10 to 90% non-condensing humidity, and is CE certified. TP-Link describes it as a router that fits on a windowsill, which is often where mobile reception is best. The box contains the Archer MX700, a power adapter, an RJ45 Ethernet cable and a quick installation guide.
