The TP-Link Archer AX72 is an AX5400 dual-band gigabit Wi-Fi 6 router rated at 4804 Mbps on 5 GHz (160 MHz) and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz. Six fixed antennas, a 4T4R 5 GHz design, beamforming and a high-power FEM cover three-bedroom houses, 4x4 MU-MIMO and OFDMA handle many devices, and it has one gigabit WAN, four gigabit LAN, USB 3.0, HomeShield security and OneMesh support.

Archer AX72 overview

The Archer AX72 is TP-Link's AX5400 dual-band gigabit Wi-Fi 6 router. Its 5 GHz radio supports IEEE 802.11ax/ac/n/a with a top rate of 4804 Mbps (802.11ax, HE160), and its 2.4 GHz radio supports IEEE 802.11ax/n/b/g at 574 Mbps (802.11ax). That 5 GHz figure is double the AX3000 class, coming from 160 MHz channels combined with a 4T4R design, in which multiple streams on the same band strengthen fault tolerance in transmission. A 1 GHz dual-core CPU runs the router.

TP-Link rates Wi-Fi capacity as high. The dual-band design allocates devices to different bands, 4x4 MU-MIMO communicates with multiple MU-MIMO clients simultaneously, OFDMA does the same for Wi-Fi 6 clients, Airtime Fairness improves efficiency by limiting excessive occupation, DFS gives access to an extra band to reduce congestion, and six streams connect your devices to more bandwidth. Coverage is listed for three-bedroom houses, with six fixed high-performance antennas forming a signal-boosting array, beamforming concentrating signal towards clients and a high-power FEM improving transmission power.

For wired devices there is one gigabit WAN port and four gigabit LAN ports. The USB 3.0 port supports NTFS, exFAT, HFS+ and FAT32 drives and provides Apple Time Machine, an FTP server, a media server and a Samba server. WAN types are Dynamic IP, Static IP, PPPoE, PPTP and L2TP, working modes are Router Mode and Access Point Mode, and IPTV support covers IGMP proxy, IGMP snooping, bridge and tag VLAN. NAT forwarding includes port forwarding, port triggering, DMZ, UPnP and virtual servers, the DHCP server offers address reservation and a client list, and both IPv4 and IPv6 are supported with QoS by device.

TP-Link HomeShield is the Archer AX72's main security layer, with real-time IoT protection, a malicious site blocker, an intrusion prevention system, DDoS attack prevention and a home network scanner listed for this model. Underneath it the router keeps an SPI firewall, access control, IP and MAC binding and an application layer gateway, and Wi-Fi traffic can be encrypted with WPA3, WPA2, WPA or WPA/WPA2-Enterprise (802.1x). Families get HomeShield parental controls: custom profiles, a professional content filter library, Family Time, Bedtime, Off Time, Time Rewards, family online time ranking, Pause the Internet and weekly and monthly reports. For remote access the AX72 can host an OpenVPN or PPTP VPN server, and as a VPN client it supports OpenVPN, PPTP and L2TP. Each band has one guest network.

The router supports TP-Link OneMesh for building whole-home coverage with OneMesh products. It is managed through the Tether app or the web page, with automatic firmware upgrades, TP-Link ID and DDNS (TP-Link, NO-IP and DynDNS). Physical controls are a Wi-Fi on/off button, a power on/off button, an LED on/off button, a WPS button and a reset button. It runs from a 12 V 2.5 A supply, measures 272.5 x 147.2 x 49.2 mm and operates from 0 to 40 degrees C at 10 to 90% non-condensing humidity, with FCC and CE certification. In the box are the Archer AX72 router, a power adapter, an RJ45 Ethernet cable and a quick installation guide.
