The TP-Link TC40GW is a Tapo outdoor pan/tilt camera that connects through 4G LTE with a nano-SIM (not included) where Wi-Fi is unavailable, or through Ethernet with PoE power. It streams 1080p Full HD, pans for 360° coverage with tracking and patrol mode, shows starlight colour night vision up to 20 m, and detects people, pets, vehicles, tampering, line crossing and sounds such as glass breaking. It is rated IP66 and records to microSD up to 512 GB.

TC40GW overview

The TC40GW is TP-Link Australia's outdoor pan/tilt 4G LTE camera. TP-Link says it is backed by its 4G networking expertise and reliably connects through 4G LTE networks, which suits places such as garages, holiday homes, warehouses and farms where constant Wi-Fi is unavailable: you simply insert a 4G SIM card (not included) for internet. The camera has a nano-SIM slot and supports LTE-FDD bands B1/3/5/7/8/20/28 and LTE-TDD bands B38/40/41, with network connectivity listed as 3G/4G LTE or LAN cable. The Tapo app's data management lets you set a data plan for the SIM and monitors the camera's monthly usage. TP-Link's guide is that one hour of 1080p live view uses about 594 MB, and that event detection, cloud storage and firmware upgrades consume more.

Power and connection can be set up two ways. Option one is the supplied 12 V DC adapter (12 V, 1 A) with internet over the 4G SIM. Option two is an Ethernet cable with PoE (802.3af/at), which TP-Link says gives safe power and stable internet while bypassing complex wiring and electrician calls; a PoE switch or PoE NVR supplies the power. RTSP is supported, and ONVIF is available only in Ethernet mode. The antenna is detachable and uses an SMA connector, so you can fit higher-power antennas compatible with SMA according to your needs.

Video is Full HD at 1920 x 1080, at 15, 20, 25 or 30 fps, with H.264 compression listed in the specifications, from a 1/2.9-inch CMOS sensor behind a 3.17 mm lens. The specification table lists the aperture as F1.65, while the night vision section calls it an F1.6 lens. The field of view is 122° diagonal, 105° horizontal and 59° vertical. Starlight colour night vision captures images in low light up to 20 m (65.6 ft) with the starlight sensor and spotlights, smart mode activates colour night vision when a person is detected, and 850 nm IR LEDs reach 98 ft (29.9 m).

Mechanically the TC40GW pans 340° for 360° pan coverage and tilts 90°, which the spec table lists as 149° tilt coverage while the overview text quotes a 130° vertical viewing range. It can track motion across that range, or run patrol mode to cruise between multiple custom points. Its AI detection list covers motion, person, pet and vehicle detection, tamper and line-crossing detection, plus meow, bark and glass-breaking sound detection, with customisable activity zones. A sound and light alarm lets you craft your own audio and adjust the intensity of the dual spotlights, the siren is rated 99 dB at 10 cm, and two-way audio has noise cancellation.

Recordings go to a microSD card of up to 512 GB (not included) or to Tapo Care, a subscription cloud service with a 30-day free trial that adds rich notifications with snapshots, encrypted protection, data backups and 30-day video clip history. Smart playback finds events by type or by sliding the timeline, Tapo sharing distributes access to others, and the camera works with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. The Tapo app requires iOS 9.0 or Android 4.4 or later.

TP-Link rates the TC40GW housing IP66 against rain, dust and heat, with an operating range of -30 °C to 60 °C and 10% to 90% non-condensing humidity. Mounting options are ceiling, wall and pole (pole-mounting loops are required but not included). The camera body measures 130.8 x 84.0 x 116.1 mm, or 139.8 x 102.3 x 234.2 mm with the included antennas and bracket. The box contains the TC40GW camera, detachable antenna, DC power adapter, mounting template, mounting bracket, mounting anchors, bracket screws, mounting screws, waterproof seal, waterproof cable attachments and a quick start guide.
