The TP-Link SM5310-T (TL-SM5310-T) is an Omada 10GBASE-T RJ45 SFP+ module that adds a 10G copper port to an SFP+ slot. It supports 1000BASE-T, 2.5GBASE-T and 5GBASE-T over Cat5e or better up to 100 m, and 10GBASE-T over Cat6a or better up to 30 m, with a 10.3 Gbps data rate and hot-swap support.

SM5310-T overview

The SM5310-T, also listed by TP-Link as the TL-SM5310-T, is an Omada 10G BASE-T RJ45 SFP+ module. Instead of an optical interface it has a single 10G RJ45 port, so an SFP+ slot can connect over UTP copper cable. Its data rate is 10.3 Gbps. TP-Link lists support for IEEE 802.3, 802.3ab, 802.3bz, 802.3an and 802.3x, together with the SFF-8432 and SFF-8472 specifications. Those standards cover 1000BASE-T (802.3ab), 2.5GBASE-T and 5GBASE-T (802.3bz) and 10GBASE-T (802.3an), and TP-Link's cable specification gives the distance for each speed.

Cable length depends on the speed and the cable category. At 1000BASE-T, 2.5GBASE-T and 5GBASE-T, the SM5310-T supports UTP Cat5e or above up to a maximum of 100 m. At 10GBASE-T it needs UTP Cat6a or above, with a maximum length of 30 m. That makes it important to check both the cable category and the run length before relying on a 10G copper link: a run within 30 m on Cat6a or better for 10GBASE-T, or up to 100 m on Cat5e or better at 1G, 2.5G or 5G.

TP-Link lists the module as hot swappable. It runs from a 3.3 V power supply and carries FCC, CE and RoHS safety and emission compliance. TP-Link rates it for operation from 0 °C to 70 °C and for storage from -40 °C to 85 °C. Physically it measures 67.4 x 13.75 x 13.8 mm (2.7 x 0.5 x 0.5 in). The port type is listed as 1 x 10G RJ45 port, and the standards list also includes IEEE 802.3x alongside the base IEEE 802.3 standard. The full specification TP-Link publishes for the SM5310-T, covering standards and protocols, power supply, maximum cable length, data rate, port type, safety and emission, environment, hot swap support and dimensions, is reproduced in the specification table on this page so it can be checked line by line.

In the box are the 10G BASE-T RJ45 SFP+ Module SM5310-T and an installation guide. Key figures to check when specifying it are: 1 x 10G RJ45 port; 10.3 Gbps data rate; 10GBASE-T to 30 m on Cat6a or above; 1000BASE-T, 2.5GBASE-T and 5GBASE-T to 100 m on Cat5e or above; IEEE 802.3an, 802.3bz and 802.3ab; hot-swappable; 3.3 V; 0 °C to 70 °C operation. ARC IP Networks supplies the SM5310-T from Australian stock with the full manufacturer's warranty.
